  7. Reading (small groups) • During centers your child will be pulled into a small group of 4-6 students. • We will work on an appropriate skill with that group. • First grade is the biggest growth in reading. • Students will be learning to decode words like short vowels: cat, pin, Long vowels: heat, gate. Blends:cl, tr, sl, ch, th. • Reading Targets ~ skill of the week (retelling, sequence) • Compound words: homework, railroad. Contractions: I’d, I’ll, he’ll, she’ll. Plurals: boxes, cats. Comparisons: bigger, biggest • Parts of speech, noun, proper nouns, verb, describing words. • Punctuation: capitals, periods, questions marks. • Sentence structure: will write complete and proper sentences with details. Example: I like to go to the park. I like to go to the park and play soccer with my friends.

  8. Sight Words • Sight words are words that do not follow the phonics rules and should be read without hesitation.(most can not be sounded out. Ex. The, come, here, friend) • Each week students will work on sight words. These sight words include a District List and Vocabulary from the weekly story. • Students need to be able to read and write sentences with these sight words. • Parents should help their child recognize these sight words in their weekly readings.

  9. Language Arts/Writing • Students will build the necessary foundations needed in writing sentences by using capital letters, proper punctuation, nouns, verbs, and describing words to write super sentences. • Students will participate in writer’s workshops where they will brainstorm ideas, write drafts, edit and revise their work, and publish their own stories and factual pieces. The students will focus on Narratives, Opinion, and Informative writing pieces. • Students will gain an understanding of using concept webs and other graphic organizers to create a story based on a main theme or write a factual piece on a given topic. They will learn to match their illustrations to their stories.

  10. (some concepts will be introduced, reinforced or taught for mastery) Math Curriculum • Operations and Algebraic Thinking • Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. (drawing pictures, using manipulative) • Understand and apply properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction. ( 2+6+4 =2+10=12) 3. Add and subtract within 20. (8+6=8+2+4=10+4=14) 4. Work with addition and subtraction equations. (7=8-1)

  11. Number and Operations in Base Ten • Extend the counting sequence.(Count to 120) 2. Understand place value (23~ 2 tens ,3 ones or 1ten, 13ones) 3. Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract. (mentally finding 10 more, 10 less)
