  2. Definition. Do we really need one?

  3. Green Color • The cause of green in water is algae. Too much algae can effect the growth of other plants, especially plants at the bottom of the body of water. This happens because algae grows on the surface and prevents sunlight from penetrating the surface.

  4. Orange-Red • Coal is the major cause of an orange-red color in water. • This can get into the water through mining and chemical cleaning of the coal. It can also fall into streams. • It can contaminate the drinking water.

  5. Light Brown • Light brown water is caused by soil erosion. • Increases turbidity of the water and makes the water very cloudy.

  6. Yellow • Yellow water is caused by bog gardens. • A bog garden can be a swamp or marsh but is pretty much any plants growing in muddy ground to soft to hold up much weight. • If these gardens get access to a larger body through a shared water way noxious gases and carbon dioxide can flow into the larger bodies depriving oxygen from everything living in that body.

  7. Sheen • Sheen is caused by oils • Animals coated in even small amounts of oil may not be able to swim or fly properly, maintain their body temperature, and reproduce.

  8. Yellow and Dark Brown • A yellowish or brownish bitter-tasting organic substance present in some galls, barks, and other plant tissues, consisting of derivatives of Gallic acid, used in leather production and ink manufacture, comes from decayed leaves • They restrict the growth of microorganisms and they effect their metabolism and respiration which is the act of breathing.

  9. White Cottony Masses • It is caused mainly by sewage fungus. • Sewage fungus is a slimy growth found in sewage and sewage-polluted waters. • Sewage fungus covers the top of the water making it hard for oxygen to reach the water. Similar to the effects of too much algae. In severe cases the water can no longer support aquatic life.

  10. Egg • The egg smell is caused by sulfur. • It gets into the water through soil erosion and has the same effects as the light brown color.

  11. Musty • This odor is mainly caused by the decay. • When things such as leaves decay in the water it lowers the level of dissolved oxygen.

  12. Chlorine • Chlorine causes the chlorine smell in water. • This can happen when water treatment plants put too much chlorine in the water and release it back into the environment. • Chlorine can kill fish and burn the edge of their gills even in a low concentration.

  13. Foaming • Can be caused by leaking sewer lines, discharges from boats, and cosmetics. • It can lower dissolved oxygen and kill organisms in the water.
