  2. What is strategic planning… • An opportunity for a community to revisit its mission • An exercise in reflective practice • An invitation for all stakeholders to contribute to the direction of identified focus areas

Engenders an increased sense of ownership among all facets of the school community Is designed on an ambitious timeline to maintain momentum Includes a visionary approach to the future Utilizes internal and external experts Allows the school to surface its own focus areas benefits of strategic planning

  5. The process

  6. Stage one:educationfocus area identificationFocus group facilitator identification

  7. Visioning stage • Each focus group is provided with a “current context” document which is studied • The group brainstorms and explores future initiatives for their area; there is no consideration given to finance or other restricting factors

  8. Visioning, continued… • Each focus groups develops 3-5 recommendations (in priority order) with a short narrative explaining each • These recommendations are submitted to the long-range planning committee where 1 of 3 things can happen:

  9. Recommendations, continued… • The recommendation is accepted • The long-range planning committee asks for clarification and modification • The recommendation is rejected

  10. Stage two

  11. It is the responsibility of the long-range planning committee to: 1) timeline eachrecommendation, 2) to assess financial viability of the recommendation3) to assign the person/group responsible for its implementation

The long-range planning committee interfacing… • The Lrp will articulate with other subcommittee of the board in its work • The lrp will work with the marketing committee to develop the external communication piece • The lrp will work with the president to develop the internal communication piece

  13. Goal:to have completed the planning process and have a draft document prepared for presentation to the board for its may, 2007 meeting
