  2. Defined • Autism means there is a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction, which adversely affects a child’s educational performance.

  3. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) • Autism is a general term for the spectrum of disabilities

  4. History • 1943 – Leo Kranner formally documented Autism • 1960 – 4 to 5 cases reported per 10,000 individuals • 1990 – prevalence rose to 5 to 31 cases reported per 10,000 individuals • Autism added as category under IDEA Initially, extreme cases were taught in an alternative setting, moderate cases in a special education setting, and undiagnosed students were taught in the regular classroom.

Accommodations and Modifications • Additional time to complete assignments • More time in taking tests • Alternative tests or assessments • Slower-paced instruction • Shorter or different assignments • Modified tests • Modified grading standards • Tests read to students • Modifications to physical aspects of the classroom

  7. Continued… • More frequent feedback • Learning strategies/study skills assistance • A peer tutor • Self-advocacy training • Tutoring by an adult • Additional monitoring by a special education teacher, teacher’s aide, instructional assistant, or other personal aide
