  1. Autism By: Kaity O’Hara

  2. Social Interaction Symptoms • Failure to establish relationships with kids their own age. • Lack of empathy. Many people living with autism have a hard time understanding feelings. • Problems developing non-verbal communication skills like eye-to-eye gazing, facial expressions, and posture.

  3. Verbal and Non-verbal communication Symptoms • Delay in learning to talk ( 40% of autistic people never speak). • Problems starting a conversation and ending it. • Stereotyped and repetitive use of language. • Someone may not understand the use of humor because they have difficulty understanding the other persons perspective.

  4. Limited Interest in Activities and Play Symptoms • Autistic people may focus on a particular part of a toy or game. For example, they might play with the fire trucks ladder and not the whole toy. • A need for sameness and routines.

  5. When do you first notice autism? • Parents usually notice autism in their child during the first 3years. • Sometimes it’s even present at birth. Signs can be very hard to distinguish during infancy. • Parents may be concerned when the child doesn’t like to be held all the time, doesn’t enjoy peek-a-boo, certain games, and does not learn to talk.

  6. Physical appearance of Autistic babies.
