Autism • Autism is a general term used to describe a broad spectrum of complex developmental brain disorders known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD) (Autism Speaks) • When Autism was originally discovered in 1943, it was thought to be caused by unloving, terrible Mothers- a view which was held until the mid 1960s.

  3. Autism • The exact cause of Autism has not yet been determined, though many popular theories exist including: • Mercury in vaccinations • Exposure to certain toxins/chemicals while in the womb • Genetic conditions such as Angelman's Syndrome.

  4. Some Characteristics of Autism • Little to not socialization skill (can be non verbal) • Tantrums • Little or no eye contact • Obsessive attachments to objects • Uneven fine motor skills • Resistance to change • Seizures

  5. Rates • Approximately 1 in 110 babies are born with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) • 70 of those diagnosed will be boys • Approximately 1.5 million Americans have an ASD

  6. Diagnosis and Treatment • Autism is diagnosed through observed behavior by doctors, teachers, and psychologists. There is no “medical” test for Autism • Autism is treated with medications for the symptoms of the illness, rather than the illness itself. • Ex. Anti-depressants may be given to combat behavior issues • Autism is also treated with behavior and speech therapies indented to encourage appropriate behavior in social settings, as well as foster communication skills • Ex. Speech pathologists
