Background • In April 2005 the University of Wales, Bangor submitted an application • to the Privy Council for degree awarding powers. • In September 2007 the institution became autonomous and renamed itself • Bangor University. • In September 2009 the University implemented its’ degree awarding • powers.

Challenges of Transition • New students for 2009/10 would receive Bangor University • certificates and students who registered before this date would • have the option of receiving a University of Wales or a Bangor • University award. • Data was gathered from students as to which type of award they • wished to receive on re-registration. • This data was recorded on our Student Information System. • The first Bangor University degree certificate was awarded on 1st • January 2010. • The majority of students who have had the option have chosen to • receive a Bangor University award on graduating in 2010.

Requirements (1) • The priority was to implement a digital system which allows the • secure printing of certificates on site. • A built in auditing system had to be included in the software. • Any new software/hardware would need to be able to integrate • into our existing systems. • A robust printer would be required that would be able to • print at speed while maintaining high quality. • The supplier would need to have a proven track record in this • area.

  8. Requirements (2) • Certificates had to be able to produced bilingually. • Increased security measures on the actual certificates was • required. • Certificate paper needed to be laser guaranteed. • Watermarked paper was required with a logo relevant to the • University in the background.

Graduation • All undergraduate students who attend the graduation • ceremonies in July receive their certificates through the post the • following month. • Most postgraduate students (taught & research) receive their • certificates at the graduation ceremony. • Students who qualify by 1st April and inform the University that • they wish to graduate in absentia receive their certificates in • advance of the ceremonies. • Whether or not a student wishes to attend the graduation • ceremony, if their certificate has been issued and what their • award date is, are all recorded on the Student Information • System - within each students record.
