KSAVE was started in response to sexual assaults that occurred on KCC campus. It is our goal to provide a safe environment on campus. One (1) in four (4) students will be the victims of an unwanted advance, or sexual assault by the end of their academic career. We at KSAVE believe that those numbers are too high. Many universities around the United States also recognize this epidemic, and have started groups similar to KSAVE to act in response to this ever growing issue. Our 1st year was filled with many different events, that were life changing not only for those that participated, but also for the staff at KSAVE. We were touched so profoundly at the support and stories that were shared. We had a bake sale as well as various other fundraisers to raise funds for our main events in April, Sexual Assault awareness month. The rest of our work throughout the year was all done through the use of donations, and of the staffs’ willingness to donate their time. Every month, a newsletter, the same as what your reading now will be published. It will be available in print form in the Student Life office, and various places around campus. Our newsletter will also be posted on our Facebook page, (KSAVE), and our blog, (the link is posted on the Facebook page website.) There are opportunities to leave comments and thoughts on our blog page. These comments are confidential. Private messages may also be sent, and only the advisor and/or the president of KSAVE have access to it. This can be a place to reach out for help, post your thoughts, or just read the newsletter. We kicked off April Sexual Assault Awareness Month with the “ClothesLine Project.” This is a national awareness project that is done on campuses all over the world to bring awareness to the affects, both initially, and long term to children and to adults that are affected by Sexual Assault. We held our 1st annual “Take Back the Night”, also a national awareness event held around the world. With the 1st year finished,we are excited to see what the 2011/2012 year will bring for us. We look forward to being on campusmore and seeing more involvement from students. We have many goals for this next year. Annually we will host the “Clothesline Project” as well as “Take Back the Night”, with the hopes that each year it will grow and empower more students. This year, specifically we are looking to provide more awareness in the Iowa High schools, by filming a Public Service Announcement (PSA). With these exciting plans for the year, we hope this newsletter empowers you. Each month will be filled with our event information, resources in the community, and personal stories of survivors of Sexual Assault. Feel free to submit your stories, poetry, artwork, or anything else you wish to be published. It can be published anonymously, it can be submitted through one of the emails listed to the right side of this page, or through our blog website.
