It’s the holiday season. This can mean joy, peace, and delight in family and friends. It can also be a difficult time full of memories, loss, and yearning. We at KSAVE, understand the mixed emotions that each individual may be experiencing. We also hope to provide some hope. Hope to not only just “survive” the season, but rather to THRIVE. What does it mean to thrive? Webster's dictionary defines the word “thrive” as “to prosper; be fortunate or successful, or to grow or develop vigorously; flourish, rise above.” This definition, we feel is an accurate description of our Hope for you this Holiday season. KSAVE came across this poem in the last few weeks when preparing for various community awareness events. This poem, written by Jean Leonard, PhD, is read at Take Back the Night events all over the world. We encourage you to read it, meditate on its words and meaning, and then make a choice. Make the choice to THRIVE. To RISE above the past, and embrace this holiday season. To view the new year as a chance to grow, and RISE! I am in awe of the elasticity of the human spirithow it can stretch widepaper thinlet people inslide our painout of our grievingheaving heartsand let it landheavy and truein the gentle handsof this loving spacea gift spun ofshared sorrowsof threads of experiencewe wish did not connect us,bind ustie us, togetherin this long marchfor a justice that is our birthrightstolenbehind closed doorsslammed shut byindividuals' and society'sdiscomfortwith dirty truths. They say a spider's webis stronger than its equivalent in steelI believe in thisdelicate haven we'vewoven tonightand hope teardropsbecome prismsto reflect the morning's sunbecause morning will comeand we will be there to rise with it. May this holiday season brings you warmth, peace and love as you find comfort knowing, we, at KSAVE are here for you. ~ Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadow ~ Helen Keller • STAFF CONTACT • INFORMATION • Jennifer Upah, Advisor • Certified Sexual Assault Counselor • TEXT number 515-867-8177 • jupah@kirkwood.edu • Mindy Pfab, President • Peer support member • 563-593-6650 • bcmindy@hotmail.com • Chris Moore, Vice President • 515-450-0837
