  1. Cellular Respiration • Catalyst: • What happens in photosynthesis? You may either use English, or scientific symbols. • Please label which molecules are reactants, and which molecules are products. • Cells cannot use glucose directly. What do they need to turn it into to do work? Write in complete sentences! Don’t talk during the Catalyst!

  2. Objectives By the end of today, SWBAT… • Explain how photosynthesis is related to cellular respiration. • Describe how a ray of sunshine ultimately becomes the ATP that powers YOUR cells.

  3. Let’s Take A Step Back… • Cells need energy to do work. • They get their energy from something called ATP. • Where is energy stored in ATP? • How is it released? • What happens to ATP when we break a bond?

  4. Man, Mr. J, This Flowchart Rocks Photosynthesis Water + Carbon Dioxide Glucose + Oxygen Cellular Respiration Energy (ATP)

  5. Cellular Respiration • Remember Monday? • Key Point #3: Cellular Respiration converts the chemical energy in glucose into chemical energy in ATP. • CR occurs in the mitochondria • Plant AND animal cells

  6. Cellular Respiration • Key Point #1: Cellular respiration takes glucose (sugar) and oxygen and turns it into carbon dioxide, water, and ATP. • Just like photosynthesis, there’s an equation for cellular respiration… + 6H2O C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + ATP REACTANTS PRODUCTS

  7. What Do You Notice…? Photosynthesis: 6CO2 + 6H2O + sun C6H12O6 + 6O2 Cellular respiration: C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP

  8. Opposites! • Key Point #2: Photosynthesis and cellular respiration are opposites • The reactants in photosynthesis are the products of cellular respiration. • The reactants in cellular respiration are the products of photosynthesis.

  9. Except… • With one IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE… • Photosynthesis and cellular respiration use different types of energy

  10. Man, Mr. J, This Flowchart Rocks Photosynthesis Water + Carbon Dioxide Glucose + Oxygen Cellular Respiration Energy (ATP)

  11. Who Does What? • Key Point #3: Plants do photosynthesis AND cellular respiration. Animals only do cellular respiration. • Plants use sunlight to make glucose (photosynthesis), then use glucose to make ATP (cellular respiration). • Animals can only use glucose to make ATP. • So… if animals can’t make their own glucose… where do they get it from?

  12. EATING FOOD!!! Duh.

  13. Cellular Process Jumble • We as a class are going to act out these two processes. • We need to have 6 CO2 • We need to have 6 O2 • We need to have 6 H20 • We need to have 1 reaction sign • We need to have 1 glucose • We need to have 1 Sun • We need to have 1 ATP

  14. Cellular Respiration Flow Charts • Cut out the squares. • Write the name (in English) of each square under its chemical symbol. • Organize the squares into the equation for photosynthesis. • Balance it!!! • Decorate the REACTANT squares in warm colors (red, yellow, orange) • Decorate the PRODUCT squares in cool colors (blue, green, purple)

  15. Mini-Lab • Question: What will happen if we try to grow basil in a room with almost no sunlight?

  16. Independent Work Time • Work on the study guide for the quiz • If you finish early, study!

  17. Key Point Wrap-Up • Key Point #1: Cellular respiration takes glucose (sugar) and oxygen and turns it into carbon dioxide • C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP • Key Point #2: Photosynthesis and cellular respiration are opposites • Key Point #3: Plants do photosynthesis AND cellular respiration. Animals only do cellular respiration.

  18. Exit Questions • Which types of cells do cellular respiration? • Describe (briefly!) how energy in sunlight becomes ATP. Think: photosynthesis and cellular respiration! Write in complete sentences! Don’t talk during the Exit Question!
