  1. Welcome to Science 12/14/10 • Take Comet, Asteroid, & Meteoroid HW out. • On your piece of paper answer the following question: • Does life exist beyond the boundaries of Earth. If no, explain why not. If yes, explain why. • Make sure your name is on your paper. • Today’s Schedule • 1. Question of the day • 2. Life Beyond Earth • 3. E.T. Creatures Activity Solar System Test is now Monday. Turn in Planet Packet if you have not yet. Research Day is tomorrow. Friday is Review Day

  2. Do you believe that life exists beyond Earth?

  3. What do all living things on Earth have in common? • One or more cells • Take in energy and use it to grow/develop • Reproduce • Give off waste

  4. What does the Earth provide to sustain all life? • Liquid water, suitable temperature range, and atmosphere • “Goldilocks” Condition- Earth is just right for life to exist. • Are these conditions necessary for life? Or are they just necessary for life on Earth?

  5. Extreme Conditions • Recently, life forms have been discovered on Earth where it was believed that no life could ever exist.

  6. If life does exist elsewhere in the Solar System where would it most likely be found? • Which planet has conditions that are most similar to Earths? • Streambeds on Mars. Life as we know it requires water. Did or does Mars have the conditions needed to support life?

  7. Life Elsewhere in the Solar System? • Fossils on Mars? • Space: Top 5 Cases For Martian Life : Video : Discovery News

  8. Life Elsewhere in the Solar System? • Europa- A moon of Jupiter • Covered in ice, similar to the Arctic Ocean. • Heat from inside Europa could keep the water liquid. • If there is water could there be life? • Space: Top 5 Reasons Europa Rocks :Stephen Hawking's Universe:

  9. Alien Creatures • Remember that on Earth animals have features and behaviors that help them live, find food, and reproduce. It can be argued that life on other planets would follow these same rules. • To understand external plant and animal features have positive benefits for an organism. • To understand that plants and animals are adapted to the environment they live in. • To understand the different environmental conditions that are present on other worlds. • To create an imaginary creature that fits into a described alien environment.

  10. Alien Creatures • Now it is your turn to create diverse creatures from unknown worlds. Use what you know about different planets and moons to create a creature. Write a short paragraph that describes each body part and it is used for.
