  1. Option 9 Where are the World’s most deadly volcanoes? Background On 18th May 1980 Mount St Helens in Washington State, USA erupted. The initial blast removed the top 396 meters of the volcano, killed 57 people, and triggered debris flows that temporarily stopped shipping on the Columbia River and disrupted highways and rail lines. The blast devastated 596 square kilometres, and destroyed timber valued at several millions of dollars. This is just one of the many volcanic eruptions that have caused loss of life and property. Task Your task is to create a tour of the world’s most deadly volcanoes. This can be created using Google Earth or as a presentation (Powerpoint or Factfile) Your tour should provide information on the following: • The location of the volcano - including the tectonic plates involved, the level of development of the country (LIC, MIC, HIC) • Times and dates of volcanic activity • The cause of the eruption • The type of volcanic eruption – for example the type of material erupted such as pyroclastic flows, lava, lahars etc • The impacts of the eruption - this should be divided into social, economic and environmental Sources The following web pages may help you with your design: http://www.pdc.org/iweb/volcano_deadliest.jsp http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/LivingWith/VolcanicFacts/deadly_eruptions.html You could also watch the video: 10 things you didn’t know about volcanoes GCSE Question Why are some volcanoes more dangerous than others?
