  1. An Investigation of the NITARP/ SSTPTS Astronomy Research Experience for Teachers Debbie French EDCI 5870 December 11, 2012

  2. Purpose To Investigate the Following Research Questions: How does participation in the NASA/IPAC Teacher Archived Research Program (NITARP, formerly known as SSTPTS) affect teachers’ attitudes toward science and scientific inquiry? How do participants view astronomers and what it means to do astronomy?

  3. Participants Past NITARP and SSTPTS teachers are eligible. Three potential participants have submitted a completed Participant Informed Consent form. One participant submitted a completed survey.

  4. Data Collection Participants were asked to first complete a survey. Once the survey was completed, I will conduct an interview with the participants. Due to participant’s time constraints, the interview will take place at the AAS meeting in January, 2013.

  9. Conclusions • Based on the participant’s responses, the biggest impact SSTPTS/NITARP had on her teaching was having the students work in collaborative learning groups. • The participant noted that this simulated “how ‘real scientists’ work.” • The participant also noted that she found working with teams “to be a challenge at times.” • Her students are still involved with authentic research as part of the Advanced Science Research class.

  10. Limitations and Implications • Limitations: • Small sample size (n=1) • In January, the 2012 NITARP class will be eligible to participate. • Participant had been involved with two other RETs. Did participation in these programs affect her answers? • Implications • RETs are very expensive. More research needs to be conducted to determine effectiveness of RETs. • How does participating in an RET change teacher’s views of science and scientists? • After participating in RETs, do teachers continue to involve students in authentic research experiences?
