  3. You Can Control Your Decisions • What are some decisions that you make on a daily basis that have the potential to change your health? • Example: Stairs vs. Escalator

  4. YOUR HEALTH TRIANGLE • Your health triangle is made up of 3 equally important areas. • If you were to draw your personal health triangle what would it look like?

  5. Which area(s) of each teen’s health is being negatively affected and how could each teen improve his or her situation? • A 7-year-old boy has come to the office complaining of a stomachache. He has a math test during the next class period. You have noticed that he comes to the office with a stomachache every time he has a math test. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL/EMOTIONAL

  6. Which area(s) of each teen’s health is being negatively affected and how could each teen improve his or her situation? • A 9th grade girl missed a week of school for her grandmother’s funeral. Now, she wants to talk with someone because she is having a hard time catching up with her schoolwork. MENTAL/EMOTIONAL and SOCIAL

  7. Which area(s) of each teen’s health is being negatively affected and how could each teen improve his or her situation? • Two 10th grade boys have been sent to the office for fighting. They have minor injuries and appear to be very angry. Both have been in a number of fights in the past. MENTAL/EMOTIONAL, SOCIAL and PHYSICAL

He is worried that he will not make weight for tonight’s big match. MENTAL/EMOTIONAL, SOCIAL and PHYSICAL

  10. THE HEALTH CONTINUUM Why can we say that your position changes yearly? Monthly? Daily? Hourly?

  11. REVIEW What are some steps you can take to promote your physical health? Describe what the health continuum’s endpoints represent. How can poor mental/emotional health affect physical health? How might your behaviors today affect your health in the future?

  12. Partner Activity • Write an editorial for the school newspaper about why each person is ultimately responsible for his/her own health. Include why it is important to understand the things that you can control. Give at least 2 examples of behaviors you can control and how those behaviors for have a positive or negative influence on your health.
