  2. The Importance of Health Education • According to the OECD (Organization for Economic Development), we spend $7,960 per person per year for health care in the U.S., totaling about $2.5 trillion.   3. The Importance of Health Education • Health spending is the biggest financial issue facing the nation.  Over the past decade, health care costs have risen over three times faster than wages, squeezing family budgets and imposing a burden on many employers. 

  4. The Nation’s Health Goals • The federal government has established national health goals and objectives through Healthy People. • One of the goals of Healthy People 2010 and now Healthy People 2020 is to reduce the over- weight and obesity rates in America. http://youtu.be/1TZ3dR69YoI

  5. OBESITY PROBLEM • Obesity rates among all children in the US (according to the CDC) • Approximately 17% of children 2-19 years are obese. • Since 1980, obesity prevalence among children has almost tripled. http://youtu.be/1Yb77kDq-Zo

  7. Becoming Health Literate • Everyday people all across the country have to make important decisions that affect their health. • People who are informed know how to interpret the information they need to make good decisions.

  11. WITH A PARNTER • Imagine it is your job to create goals for Healthy People 2030. Compose a list of 15 VERY SPECIFIC goals for Americans. These need to cover physical, mental, and social elements of health.
