  1. Kindergarten News Sept. 23 - 26, 2013 Math: We have started Topic 2 in our new math curriculum. Topic 2 will focus on Comparing and Ordering Numbers 0-5. The new vocabulary words for this topic: more, fewer, same as, same number of, column, row, as many, order and the ordinals first – fifth. Lots of new math meanings to learn! The students are getting more comfortable with the rotations during our math time and they are learning to transition between activities more efficiently. Literacy: Our Reader’s Workshop mini-lessons this week: I can get better at reading by making sure I am reading the whole time; I can read for a longer time by rereading my books, and I can practice reading by pointing and knowing where to start. We are building a new vocabulary wall for literacy and math. The words for our literacy portion of the wall, the words will come from specific books we are reading. The new words we have been introduced are from the stories Caps for Saleand Three Billy Goats Gruff. Some of the new words are: disturb, mischievous, imitate, ordinary, wise, gobble and villain. We also learned how to clap the syllables in words and had fun using our names as a starting point! This is a beginning skill as we learn how to separate words into individual phonemes which is a critical skill for reading and writing. Letter/Sound focus: O (2 wks) Red word: an, can Science: We covered the colors purple, white and black. The books we used were Harold and the Purple Crayon and Roundtrip (very cool book by Ann Jonas). Mrs. Tooley came on Thursday for her 1st visit of the year. Today’s topic was “Things with Wings” and the combined classes made a beautiful mural of migrating butterflies! We will see Mrs. Tooley again on October 17th. Social Studies: Working together and getting along during work and play continues to be our focus while we build our classroom community. Other news: Sarah Johnson (Skye’s mom) has graciously offered to be in charge of our fund raising basket for the PFC. The theme is pizza/Italian and we will welcome any gift certificates or items related to this theme. Donations can be sent to school byMonday, October 21st. If you would like to contact Sarah, her email is skwarie@gmail.com.
