  1. TTK Words Sept 23, 2013 • Verbal: a verb form that functions in a sentence as a noun or a modifier rather than as a verb. The three types of verbals are gerunds, participles, and infinitives. • Gerund: are verbs that are used as nouns. Every gerund, without exception, ends in “ing.” Ex: Running is my favorite hobby. • Participle: a verb form that can be used as an adjective. It modifies a noun or a pronoun. Present participles usually end in –ing. Past participles usually end in –ed. Ex: The barking dog woke the entire neighborhood. Andrew calmed his excited sister. • Do not confuse the participle used as an adjective with the participle used as a main verb in a verb phrase (helping verb + main verb). -The waiting pedestrian watched the traffic signals change. -The pedestrian was waiting for the traffic signals to change. • Infinitive: a verb form made with the word ‘to’ plus the regular form of the verb. Infinitives can be used as nouns, adjectives, or adverbs. Infinitives are NOT prepositional phrases. Ex: The sight to see is the Washington Monument. (adjective); The woman stopped to eat. (adverb) • Active Voice: When the subject performs the action, the verb is in the active voice. Example: "Steve loves Amy." Steve is the subject, and he is doing the action: he loves Amy, the object of the sentence. • Passive voice: When the subject receives the action, the verb is in the passive voice. Example: "Amy is loved by Steve." The subject of the sentence becomes Amy, but she isn't doing anything. Rather, she is just the recipient of Steve's love. The focus of the sentence has changed from Steve to Amy.

  2. Warm Up September 24, 2013 GERUNDS!!! A gerund is a verb form ending in –ingthat is used as a noun. A gerund is a verbal which is a word that has characteristics of both a verb and a noun. For example: Skiing down that slope was fun. Dad’s favorite pastime is fishing for trout. Write four sentences that include a gerund. Be prepared to share your sentences!!

  3. Warm Up September 25, 2013 SCREAMING AND FRETTING A participle is another type of verbal ending in –ing. This can become confused with a gerund. But a participle is a verb form used as an adjective as in the screaming child or the fretting mother. Example: The smiling child waved. Smiling is modifying child (used as an adjective). Underline the participle in each sentence. • The roaring wind came first. • The flickering lights prompted us to light the candles. • The pouring rain beat against the windows. • The running child almost slipped and fell.
