GEOLOGY AND GEOGRAPHY • Sometime soon after 11 September 2001, Osama bin Laden and his second in command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, in a seemingly indistinguishable ravine somewhere and praised the 9/11 attacks before the Al Jazeera cameraman. The video camera was apparently set up on a tripod -- surface topography, and rock types of the area. • ravine showed only the highly weathered rock and sediment directly behind the terrorists, as well as a probable shear or fault zone • rocky tor landforms on the horizon.--the tors and shear zone were obvious and seemed similar to other rocks and landforms --NangaharProvince near there.

Before a team of elite Navy forces stormed Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, they and senior US officials had closely studied a digital mock-up of the facility and even a physical miniature, able to be laid out on a table. The model was built over the past several months by analysts at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency ---employed a global network of imagery satellites and sensors, some of which are so precise they’re banned from being sold on the commercial market.

NATIONAL GEOSPATIAL INT AGENCY………………………………………….. • The NGA's contributions to the bin Laden mission are substantial. • Creating three-dimensional renderings of the Abbottabad compound using imagery and laser-based sensing devices—laser radar, or ladar. • Analyzing data from a sophisticated next-generation drone that kept watch on the compound before, during, and after the raid. The drone was an RQ-170 built by Lockheed Martin. • Helping the Joint Special Operations Command create mission simulators for the pilots who flew the helicopters into the breach. • Providing to the CIA and other policymakers assessments of the number of people who lived inside the compound, their heights and genders.

NATIONAL GEOSPATIAL INT AGENCY •  NGA's technological capacities are very secret, because if the terrorists can ascertain what the agency can do with remote sensing data, they can alter their plans accordingly. • NGA can determine, from quite a distance, what an object or a building is made of. • It conducts sophisticated pattern analysis of human characteristics, such as gait and body size. • It possesses some of the most sophisticated facial recognition software on Earth. • It has mastered “all-weather” imagery analysis: • hyperspectral and multispectral sensors on satellites and drones can see through thick clouds.

GEOGRAPHIC PROFILING • Geographic profiling is an investigative support technique for serial violent crime investigations. • The process analyzes locations connected to a series of crimes to determine the most probable area in which the offender lives. • Geographic profiling should be regarded as an information management system designed to help focus an investigation, prioritize tips and suspects, and suggest new strategies to complement traditional methods.
