  1. Implementation of Geo-Spatial  Digital Archive Project – Part 1 WUNCA-19, July 3, 2008

  2. OUTLINE • Overview of GDAP • Metadata for GDAP • Implementation/Demo • GDAP • OpenLayer • Conclusion/Questions

  3. Overview of GDAPGeo-Spatial Digital Archive Project By COL.Surat Lerlum surat@ait.ac.th (Remote from Kyoto University)

  4. Motivation • Availability of • Data: digital data via remote sensors, aerial photos, vector, 3D, public maps • Communication: internet, multimedia • Tools/Software • Cheaper hardware: computers, storage, digital cam, camcorder • Browser is almost everything!! -- The World is rectangle --

  5. Problem Statement • Rarely exist online digital archive for Geo-Spatial Digital Data in Thailand • Most kept for private usage • Create online Geo-Spatial Digital Archive for public research

  6. โครงการจัดตั้งศูนย์ข้อมูลภูมิสารสนเทศผ่านเครือข่ายสารสนเทศเพื่อพัฒนาการศึกษา (GDAP) • A demonstration system of online geo-spatial data service that user can search and access the data through various methods: text search, geo-location search, and meta-data search. The applications of the data will be for any studies that can utilize these data sets. SL-02

  28. Applications of Aerial Photographs • As we have to study the information in the time period that the other information, such as satellite images did not exist yet, the only information that is available to us is the old aerial photographs of the studied area that were taken in the early period. As one can expect, it is the most valuable information that we can acquire when we need to study further back in time. In addition, in current situation, the high resolution satellite images, such as Quickbird, IKONOS are still available at high cost. The utilization of existing aerial photographs is still an alternative to the high cost high resolution satellite image for the days to come.

  29. Aerial Photographs of the Southeast Asia • The most completed set of aerial photograph for the Southeast Asia is the series called “World Wide” series took by U.S. army after the World War II in the 1950’s. • The older collection is the Williams-Hunt Collect (in separate presentation)

  30. “World Wide” series • Most of the areas in the Southeast Asia were recorded into this archive. The current problem of this archive is that the film has become aged and decayed by time. In the near future, if the collection will not be preserved, the collection will be unusable.

  31. Samples from “World Wide” series in Phimai area, Thailand

  32. William Hunt’s Aerial Photographs Collection

  33. Sample Applications • History and Archaeology Study • Urban Study • Land Use/Land Cover Study

  34. History and Archaeology Study • Ayutthaya Case Study
