  2. Children plus project • Implemented by All Ukrainian Network in partnership with Elena Franchuk “ANTIAIDS” Foundation, Elton John AIDS Foundation and Romanian Angel Appeal Foundation • The role of Romanian Angel Appeal Foundation is to offer consultancy for diagnosis disclosure to HIV positive children from Ukraine

  3. Children plus project (cont.) Consultancy from Romanian Angel Appeal includes: • Conduct a baseline study among parents of HIV positive children in Ukraine • Revising and adapting methodology and working instruments for diagnosis disclosure • Training for Ukrainian professionals (psychologists, social workers and doctors) • Study tours in Romania for Ukrainian professionals

  4. Romanian experience • Program on diagnosis disclosure 2001-2006 • Children and teenagers were involved • More than 1000 children and young people find out the diagnosis after proper counseling • Challenges: • Parents refusal • Children’s suspicions • Misinformation of parents and children

  5. Working procedures • Multidisciplinary team: psychologists, social workers, doctors and nurses • Periodical training for the staff • Monitoring instruments • Reporting

  6. Working methods & instruments • Individual counseling for parents and children • Group counseling for parents and children • Peer educators • Informative materials for parents, children and family (booklets, flyers)

  7. What we have learned? • After concealing the diagnosis to the child for many years, is difficult for parents to take the decision to tell the truth • Parents were afraid that the child will commit suicide or will not take the treatment • Most of the children after 10-12 years old have already suspicions on their illness (and also misinformation)

  8. What we have learned? (cont.) • None of the children involved in the project tried to commit suicide • It’s easier and better to work on diagnosis disclosure with younger children (7-11 years old) • After diagnosis disclosure: • Adherence on ARV treatment was improved • Communication within the family was improved after diagnosis diclosure

  9. Why a film on diagnosis disclosure? • The film contains testimonials from professionals – doctor, psychologist ,social workers and from beneficiaries – a girl and her mothers • One of the most important arguments for parents is other parents’ experience • Not all the parents or grandparents know how to read or understand easily a booklet

  10. Conclusions • Diagnosis disclosure is a process • The length of this process depends not only on specialists involved but also on child and his family and on other external conditions • Diverse working methods and instruments should be used • Every intervention should be adapted to child and family specific
