A Brief Overview of Harvard University • Harvard was established in 1636 by the “Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay colony.” It was modeled after Cambridge University, England and named after its first benefactor: John Harvard, a minister. • “To advance Learning and perpetuate it to Posterity; dreading to leave an illiterate Ministry to the Churches.” • Harvard University grew from one school and 9 students to an enrollment of more than 6,700 undergraduates and over 14,500 professional and graduate students in one college and 10 graduate schools. • Some statistics: • About 2,100 (non-medical) faculty • An additional 11,000 medical school faculty • Total real estate is 5,076 acres • Over 323,000 living alumni

  9. The South Asia Initiative at Harvard University Events at Harvard Dr. A. P. J. Kalam, 11th President of India, delivered SAI’s annual Mahindra Lecture on September 27, 2011. Dr. Kalam also participated in an event at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and a student event at the Harvard Law School During his time at Harvard, Dr. Kalam visited six laboratories and was given overviews on topics ranging from nanometer technology to molecular physics

The South Asia Initiative at Harvard University Harvard Faculty and Students in the Region • 34 Partner Organizations offering Internships to Harvard Undergrad and Graduate Students for Summer 2012 • 58 students received funding from SAI to participate in internships and conduct research on or about the South Asia region. 4 Harvard students (2 graduate students from HKS and HLS, and 2 undergraduates) accompanied John Briscoe, Professor at HSPH and SEAS, to Pakistan in Summer, 2011 Under Briscoe’s direction, the students researched inter-provincial water issues, including discussion of current legal and institutional framework for water allocation that exists in Pakistan
