  2. Code: • SI 12

  3. Descriptor: • demonstrate the application of their values and beliefs the importance of honoring the Spirit and Intent of Treaties.

  4. Treaty Education Learning Indicators for this Outcome: • Pose questions of how they and society might honor treaties • Honor the value of treaties and apply the principles of treaty making • Reflect on and discuss personal experiences in honoring treaties

  5. Key Planning Questions: • Ask students what kind of agreements do they make with friends? • Do you seal it with a handshake? • What happens if you do not pay up on a lost bet? • Relate this to treaties. • What about WWI treaties? League of Nations? • Which ones do you ignore? Which ones do you carry through on? Why?

  6. Student Assessment: • What agreements do you have with friends? How do you treat them? Follow through? Consequences?

  7. Motivational Set: • Tell the students the day before this class that you are going to do something fun (ie.: watch a movie, play a game in class, bring potluck for dinner tomorrow). Then when the class comes to tomorrow, do not follow through on your promise and see the reaction you get from the kids. • Tell them sorry, you didn’t shake on it. Let them go with this for a while. Then relate how they feel with the way First Nations probably feel about Treaties.

  8. Procedures: • What makes Treaties sacred? • What would cause someone to break a treaty? • What would be the gain? • Ie.: lottery ticket example

  9. Resources: • Use the grade 8 section of resources for the Treaty Making Process • Terminology (convenantvs contract) • Appendix 8-4A, 4B, 4C, 8-5A, 8-5B

  10. Student Reflection: • How do you feel about treaty signings? • Are we bound to them? • How would you feel if you were on the side that is getting short changed? • How could an agreement like the Treaties be carried through while making all parties happy?

  11. Teacher Reflection: • What worked? • What didn’t? • What needs changing? Revision?
