  1. Page One DESIGN BRIEF TASK ANALYSIS I am going to design and make a {write type of storage here} that is influenced by the {insert movement here} design movement. This product will be used {insert use environment here} by {insert target market here}. Materials? Manufacture? How? Design Brief Used? Storage Where? Sold? Who? Stored? What? Size? Theme? Cost? Customer Profile Include information about a customer that you are designing for. You may have more than 1 customer profile. You could include these questions and answers: Name, age, location, what do you think about (board games/tables…) Favorite music, films, games, apps, fashion, environment…

  2. Page Two ICT research Find products on shopping websites/other websites that relate to your product. Using a table similar to the one below fill the details of each product. Research (3+ products) • - What does it look like? describe colour, texture, styling etc. • Is it a cheap or expensive product (e.g. Tesco finest vs. value. • who is this aimed at (link to above) • where would it be used? Can it be recycled? • Measurements in mm (is it too big, too fiddley? Handles easy to use etc? • any small parts? Risks of catching fingers/skin? What age group is it safe for? 3+ • what does it do? • what is it made from? how is it made? Aesthetics Cost Customer Environment Size Safety Function Materials

  3. Page THREE Investigate an existing product(s) Photograph it from various angles, label all parts (no matter how obvious) and complete a table similar to the one below. RESEARCH: Existing product research Research (1+ products)

  4. Page Four Write a questionnaire of ‘closed questions. (Multiple choice questions, eg how much would you pay for a board game? £10 £15 £20) Who, what, when, where, how? Write 10+ questions and ask at least 10 people. Include the questions, graphs and a summary of each graph. Questionnaire According to the survey most people would be willing to spend between £15-£20

  5. Page Five What do you want your product to look like? Find some design influences. For example if your product is a modern (2013) table you may want to look up contemporary table designers. Research (Research a designer/design movement/style/theme) CHOSEN DESIGN MOVEMENT MEMPHISIS The Memphis-Milano Movement was an Italian Post Modern design movement (1981-1987) that designed furniture, fabrics, ceramics, glass and metal objects. Stick pictures of products from your chosen design movement. Annotate images with the following information: • Trends and similarities between products: • colours used |(pastels, bold colours etc) • shapes used (geometric, curvy etc) • patterns (floral, plants, animal print) • materials (wood, metals, plastics, transparent) • finishes (paint, varnishes, glossy, matt

  6. Page six Whatever you are designing you will need the dimensions of the product, products that function with it and how we fit with that product. Anthropometric data RESEARCH: IMPORTANT DIMENSIONS Research (Dimensions) Draw (or get images of) the products you will store inside your storage item and include full dimensions E.G.  DVD Case: 190mm x 135mm x 15mm CD Case: 142mm x 125mm x 12mm This is the measurements of humans. This (anthropometric data) data helps us design products that fit us better. Ergonomically.

  7. Page Seven This page is a summary of the pages previous. Questionnaire analysis The majority of people are looking for a product that is -Black -Costs £15-20 -Made of a sustainable material… Design Brief Put in the brief here Customer Would prefer a product that is modern (contemporary), simple, stylish…… Research analysis ICT research Most of the products I researched were: Made from wood/Card Had bright colours The boards were not bigger than 60x60cm… Existing product research Well packaged Bright colours The board was 50x50cm… You could include a table like this. Tick tasks completed and add sources of research. This would show the examiner that you have researched outside of the internet.

  8. Page eight Specification Aesthetics Eg It must have a modern style, dark colours Cost How much will the materials cost? £10? How much will you sell it for? Customer Who is the target audience? Will anyone else use it? Environment How will the materials of the product effect the environment? Where will the product be ? Safety What is the suitable age range for the use of the product? Are there any dangers that should be noted? Does it have any electrical parts,? Size What are the approximate dimensions? Function What does it do? What is it used for? How is it used? Material What materials will be used? Include paints/varnishes if you can .

  9. Page nine Design ideas (section 2) Check page 86 (AQA text book RM) for examples Design work must include annotation 1. Number your designs 2 .You must have hand drawn 2d, and 3d. Google sketch up and prototypes 3.Explain your design, eg, This Table is a contemporary style coffee table. It is designed with a living room in mind. 4. Materials, eg, It will be made from Pine 5.Which specification points does it meet?. Eg, 1.1, 2.1 6. Would your target customer/audience like it? Eg, No because they wanted a traditional table and this one is too modern. 7. Possible construction methods eg The sides of the table will be joined with a finger joint. You need SIX +design ideas with annotation- don’t forget to link to your design movement!

  10. Page 10 Design Developments 1 and 2, be sure to make prototypes and photograph them Design Development You need to choose two ideas and develop them using scalecard models and sketches.

  11. Page ten Using 2d design, Google sketch up and/or any other graphical software that you know (Photoshop, illustrator, InDesign, 3ds max, cinema 4D…) draw up your final design. It may be different each time. Describe your improvements. What went wrong what went well, screen shots/print screens also useful. CAD development Use CAD (google sketch up) to model and develop your final design. Include a working drawing with dimensions.
