  1. Project Status Update R10004: OS/OA Low Energy Printing Mechanical Engineers: Dean Culver Shawn Hoskins Derek Meinke Tim Salter

  2. Where We Are • A Better Understanding • Project Goals • The Potential of the Concept *Courtesy of mapsoftheworld.com and pbs.org

  3. The Value in Growth

  4. The Mission • The end customer would like to have low-energy consumption printing options in order to stay within local power constraints while attempting to fulfill their communication and documentation needs in societies and markets that are quickly growing into their roles in the communication age. • The immediate or corporate customer would like to have low-energy consumption printing technology in order to appeal to this market as well as innovate in areas where a quality trade-off may be present.

  5. Additional Data: MSD Low Energy History • Fuser Test Beds • Fuser Parameter Data • Subcomponent Design • Electro-photography Transfer Station • Detailed Design Documentation for EP system • Sub-Component Optimization • P09505 • Interviews and Visits • Concurrent Project: P10505

  7. Planned Interviews • Mr. Bill Nowak • Corporate Customer • Stakeholder • Dan Costanza • Corporate Customer • Stakeholder • Previous MSD Project Team Leads

  8. The Need: Isioma Nnodum • Representing the end customer • Low Energy Demand • Low Cost • Low Maintenance • Environmental Temperature Operability • Low Running Cost

  9. Low Running Costs Low Maintenance Affinity Diagram: Isioma Nnodum Cartridge replacement costs are high Technical repair skill pool low Life cycle costs for office printers are high Minimize lifetime cost Low Energy Demand Many towns in Nigeria rely on personal generators Activating high-demand appliances (printers, computers, etc.) endangers power grid Overshoot damages generator or causes blackouts Environmental/ Temperature Operability Low Cost Common consumer low-income Low demand for high-quality, high cost characteristics Humidity extremes in Africa Temperature extremes in Africa Low availability of environmental control

  10. House of Quality: Isioma Nnodum

  11. The Need: Corporate Customers • Representing Xerox, HP, etc. • Energy Consumption • Quality of Ink to Media • Speed of Printing • Cost of Ink Replacement • Delivery to World Markets • Profit Margin

  12. Affinity Diagram: Corporate Customers Quality of Ink to Media Energy Consumption Ink must adhere to many types of media surfaces Low energy usage for minimal grid strain Ink should be universally reproducible Thousands of pages add up to thousands of watts Profit Margin Delivery to World Markets Customer is looking for a corporate benefit Need to show customer “pile of money” Transportation and packaging costs Project needs investors to be satisfied to stay on-board High demand for low energy printing in developing countries Cost of Ink Replacement Speed of Printing The competitive market is introducing high speed printers The most common demand from the end-user Ink cartridge manufacturing costs
