Quality management systems • To date, some of the tactical methods of achieving quality control and efficiency in processes used to produce goods and services are: • The Malcolm Baldrige Award Programme • Six Sigma • Lean (Toyota Production System) • Total Quality Management and • JS ISO 9001:2000

  3. Strength of JS ISO 9001:2000 • Although JS ISO 9001:2000 was designed as a standard for quality management systems, it was written for top management and should be implemented as a strategic initiative. • What has often been regarded as its weakness – a failure, to be specific - is actually its strength.

  4. JS ISO 9001:2000 for strategy You need specificity in procedures You need generality in strategy • JS ISO 9001:2000 will support corporate strategy in the following areas: • Governance • Asset utilization • Operations and • A balanced score card

Quality management for corporate governance JS ISO 9001:2000 provides the structure for • Setting objectives • Attaining them and • Monitoring performance Consider how the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) (www.oecd.org) defines governance: “The system by which business corporations are directed and controlled. This system specifies the rights and responsibilities of participants and spells out rules and procedures for decision making. It provides the structure for setting objectives and the means of attaining them and of monitoring performance.”

Guiding Asset Utilization • JS ISO 9001: 2000 is an appropriate methodology for asset utilization as it refers to determining and implementing the appropriate capabilities to meet business needs including material, knowledge, skills and infrastructure.
