  7. Middle Colonies • Dutch settle New Netherlands Capital New Amsterdam later taken by English Duke of York • Quakers moved into Pennsylvania with leader William Penn called his colony the “Holy Experiment” • Established Philadelphia “The City of Brotherly Love”

  8. 13 Colonies • Wealth sent to England • Mercantilism and balance of Trade • Navigation Act • Only English Ships could trade with colonies • Vessels must have English (3/4) crews • Certain products could only be exported to England • All goods had to pass thru English ports • Distance forced a spirit of self determination

  11. 1692 Salem • Salem witch trials start as trial of three older women and quickly creates hysteria. • Causes: Lack of governmental control, generational strife,family animosities, agriculture vs. commercial tension

  12. Education • 3 Universities formed Puritans formed 2 Harvard (1636) and Yale (1701). Anglicans 1 William and Mary (1693)

Summary Questions • For most that came to Jamestown; what was their goal? • How did the Natives and English relationship change? • What allowed Jamestown to become profitable? • What was the main purpose of Massachusetts Bay Colonist arrival? • This Colony was called the “Holy Experiment”. • This Dutch colony was later called New York and was a fur trapping center.
