  5. Among the challenges

  6. Assigning 101 • Give the game the referees it needs • That can vary • Give the referees the games they need • Within limits of game and referee availability • But … turnbacks, rainouts, rescheduled games • We DO have to fill the games • Flexibility is appreciated • Assignors are “referees of last resort”

  7. Advancement and development • Work with more experienced officials • Attempt to provide more mentorship • All-female crews • All-youth crews • We pass names along to travel assignors • We’re always scouting for high school refs

  8. Two flavors of soccer • USSF-affiliated • Stafford rec and adult • FFC rec • CSL adult • Youth travel • Non-affiliated • Spotsylvania Rec • Fredericksburg Rec • Scholastic games

  9. Youth rec leagues • Fredericksburg rec • starts August 17 • Spotsylvania rec • starts August 26 • Stafford rec • starts September 7 (jamboree on August 24) • FFC rec • starts September 7

  10. Rec game basics • It’s younger kids … • 75% are U-12 or below • 50% are one-referee games • 25% are two-referee games • 25% are three-referee games • Number of games is decreasing

  11. Rec game basics • But there are benefits • Gain experience • Build confidence • Give back to the game • Make some money

  12. Breaking in • FFC rec – U-8 • 5 a side / 8 on roster / 1-2 coaches • Fredericksburg rec – novice (U-8) • 6 a side / 10 on roster / 2 coaches • Stafford rec – U-10 • 7 a side / 10 on roster / 1-2 coaches • Spotsylvania rec – peewee/mustang (U-8) • 11 a side / 14-16 on roster / 3-4 coaches

  18. Turning back an assignment • Things happen • Cannot be done on Arbiter • E-mail OK if more than 24 hours before game • Call or text if it’s less than 24 hours • Be sure you get a response! • You are NOT expected to find a replacement
