  3. CNN / Student News • What do you think can be done to further verify the passports of airline passengers? If it turns out that there is a link between stolen passports and the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, do you think more countries will take this course of action? Why or why not? • What is your opinion of Edward Snowden's leaking of classified information about NSA activities? Do you think his actions protected personal privacy rights, do you think they jeopardized national security, or do you think they did both? Explain.

What Lead Japan to War 1) Militarism – Japan had been becoming a major naval power in the pacific, they wanted to be the biggest. 2) Friction between the U.S. and Japan – • Japan resented the U.S. immigration act of 1924 – which barred Japanese immigration to America • in 1940, the U.S. and Britain instituted a trade embargo with Japan 3) Lack of natural resources – • Japan had to import 88 percent of their oil. • no trade concessions they would be forced to go to war • Japan needed the oil rich Dutch east indies and the rubber plantations of British Malaya

  5. U.S. vs. Japan • The U.S. refused to cooperate and negotiate • The U.S. had broken the secret Japanese diplomatic codes in late 1941 • U.S. deciphering program was codenamed “magic”

  7. U.S. Enters World War II • December 7th, 1941- Japan leads the attack on Pearl Harbor • Resulted in the U.S. declaring war on Japan, soon after Germany declared war on the U.S. *Allies Powers- Britain, France, United States, Russia *Axis Powers- Germany, Italy, Japan

  8. WORLD WAR IITHE WAR IN THE PACIFIC • On December 8, congress declared war on Japan • President Roosevelt declared December 7th as “a day that would live in infamy.”

  9. Theaters of War War in the Pacific Island Hopping- strategy of quickly capturing islands throughout the Pacific territory Used to gain dominance in area

War in the Pacific- The Battle of the Coral Sea The Tide Turns Against Japan May 7 1942 • The first naval battle in history where the two opposing forces never saw each other. • All the fighting was done by carrier based aircraft. • No one won. • Result: • Japanese abandon their plans to set up future bases in the area. • Allies gained the momentum.

THE WAR IN THE PACIFIC- Battle of Midway June 4-June 7, 1942 The most important battle in the Pacific. • The Japanese attempt to draw out and destroy the U.S. Pacific Fleet • The Americans destroyed all four of the Japanese heavy aircraft carriers • The Japanese navy never recovered from these losses or regained the offensive initiative again.

The War in the Pacific- Battle of Iwo Jima February 19, 1945 • American Marines land on the volcanic island of Iwo Jima. • strategically important as an air base for long-range bombing missions • Success!! • The American’s established an airfield on the island for future air raids against Japan.

Battle of the Bulge- December 1944 • December 1944, Adolph Hitler attempts to split the Allied armies in northwest Europe • Used surprise blitzkrieg tactic thrust • Blitzkrieg- “Lighting warfare” based on speed and surprise! • American units fight a desperate battle to stop the German advance • The U.S. Third Army is moved to Bastogne to provide support for the Allied defense. • Result: A crucial shortage of fuel for the Germany Army proved fatal , Hitler stops his pursuit of the U.S. Army

THE WAR IN EUROPE- Operation BarbarossaJune 22, 1941 – Germany launches a surprise attack against Russia • Was Stalin ready?- no! • Stalin was warned that the Germans might be planning an attack • Stalin refused to believe his generals advice • German invades Russia under the idea of lebensraum • lebensraum-a belief by Nazis it was necessary for national existence or economic self-sufficiency to take land • the Germans intend to enslave or wipeout the Russian population • Stalin utilized his plan of scorched earth during the German Invasion- WIN!

THE NORTH AFRICA CAMPAIGN • the British 8th army and the German Africa corps will wage armored warfare across north Africa. • why Africa?– imperialism! who will control the most territory • the Africa corps finally surrenders to British and American forces in may 1943. • Army leaders: • Field Marshal Erwin Rommelcommandthe German Africa corps • General Bernard Montgomery commandsthe British 8th Army
