BELLWORK What about the beginnings of American art makes it special? What do you think Americans valued in art?
PLANNER: HOMEWORK This weekend, I would like you to take some time to research an early Revolutionary. Give me a few bullet points about them. The most important question I want you to answer about them: Were they just a Revolutionary, or did they have other hobbies and interests as well?
Utilitarian Art and John Trumbull 11-08-18
American Art • Along with “history paintings” that told the story of America, there were other types of art being produced during the American Revolution • However, much like Native art, these types of art were being used for a purpose • Pieces of silver and porcelain were crafted and used as Chinaware and vessels for serving • Why might it matter that early American art was Utilitarian?
American Utilitarian Art • Do you have an idea of who could have made those pieces? • It was actually… • Paul Revere! • Long before the Revolution, Revere was an engraver and silversmith • This goes to show that even artists use their voices to make change in other ways • What do you think of Revere’s work? • How do you think his art shapes America?
American Utilitarian Art • Something else to consider… • There is a very interesting story about porcelain in early America • Usually, the “porcelain” that is seen is usually stoneware and not true porcelain • However, in 2017, there was a true piece of porcelain found in Philadelphia, that was most likely produced there
American Art • Let’s recap: What was happening during the Revolution? • We were boycotting everything British • We did not want British taxes, which meant we did not want British imports • This meant that we had to learn to craft things we liked ourselves • This brings about an interesting point to do with art • When we are forced out of a certain market, do we try to replicate art ourselves? • Does an art world expand when isolation from someone else occurs?
John Trumbull • So let’s switch gears to talk about an artist • Much like other artists, John Trumbull felt like he did not really belong in the life he was encouraged to live • His father wished him to study law at Harvard, but he wanted to be an artist • He was a fan of drawing and painting, and wanted to make a living at that • However, he decided to follow his father’s wishes • But then… • The War came!
John Trumbull • In the Revolutionary War, Trumbull fought alongside other soon-to-be Americans and was promoted to colonel • He was an aide to George Washington
John Trumbull • How does Trumbull relate to other artists we’ve talked about? • How does he relate to the art world in general? • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xr3C7f9Nmfo
