  1. Transportation Aliza Tuttle, Casey Gifford, Kalli Wells, and Megan Blass

  2. Quick Facts • Transportation is the second largest contributor to green house gases, following agriculture • Over 80% of the student body lives under 10 miles away from the school

  3. Current transportation patterns Sustainable practices already in place Sustainable practices that could be implemented Changes that can practically and cost efficiently be implemented in our school or district. Implementation of those practices Goals

  4. Statistics • 29% of students drive to school • 30% are brought by their parents • 32% ride the bus • 4% walk or ride a bike • 5% use other modes of transportation

  5. Sustainable Changes • Biodiesel for school buses • Carpool program • No Idling Signs

  6. Biodiesel for Buses • B20 vs. B100 • B20=20% biodiesel + 80% diesel • B100=100% biodiesel • EPA Emissions Findings • Decrease in carbon monoxide, particulate matter, and hydrocarbons • Slight increase in nitrous oxide • No significant difference in CO2 emissions • Sustainability • Cost • ULSD is $3.23 p/g • Biodiesel is $3.64 p/g • Convenience • Oberson oil is the current fuel provider • They retail biodiesel • Complications • Fuel filters • Hoses and fittings

  7. Current Fuel Consumption • 39 district routes • Budget for 80-90 thousand gallons • Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel • In 2007 • Used 105,000 gallons of ULSD • Spent $250,000 on fuel • Supplied by Oberson Oil • On site filling tank at bus depot

  8. The Next Step • Bus company is willing to change • Meet in October to incorporate it into the budget

  9. CV Carpool Results

  10. Carpool Survey Results • Number of students who do not carpool: 191 • Number of students who carpool with one other person (2 people in car): 128 • Number of students who carpool with two or more other people (3+ people in car): 52 • Number of students who do not drive: 115

  11. Do you know someone you can carpool with? • Yes: 50% • No: 35% • I already carpool: 15%

  12. Our Goal • Increase the number of students who carpool • Decrease the number of cars in the parking lot • Reward students who participate in carpooling • Promote lifelong sustainable practices

  13. Our Strategy • Carpool Week • Carpooling Danglers • Prime Parking • Advertising benefits (money saved on gas, make new friends) • New sustainable tradition at Crescent Valley

  14. No Idling Initiative • Main Goals • Post Signs at Each School in 509j • Spread Awareness • End Idling!

  15. Implementation • 18% of cars did not idle • Posted Signs • 78% of cars did not idle 400% increase in not idling for over 30 seconds

  16. Furthering the Initiative • District Wide • Met with District officials • Sponsoring of 1 sign per school • Need to meet with every principal and head campus steward on each campus • Pinpoint the exact location of each sign

  17. Next Steps: Complete! • Schedule meetings with remaining 5 schools • Turn in Sign Placement Plans to district • Find additional funding • Post Signs • Write newsletter article for each school, as well as the district newspaper and editorial for the G-T
