  2. Grant Wiggins says: “The goal is not content mastery. The goal is not for students to learn stuff. The goal is what students can do with the information in the long term. Understanding is not enough. The goal is to use knowledge—knowledge itself is not a goal.”

  3. What Does Wiggins’ Quote Mean for Us? • You may not remember the “buzz” words • You should remember the fundamental concepts of flexibility and adaptability • Students develop skills to: • Analyze situations (professionally and personally) • Serve as an appropriate role model for others • Change their communication as necessary • Can change their personal path if necessary • Make informed decisions

Terry Doyle, Ferris State • Students need to understand that learning is a change in neuron patterns of their brain. • Neurons grow over time as you learn new info. • If that information is not used, the new neural growth is reabsorbed. • Learning requires engagement. • The person who does the work does the learning. • Students need to engage and practice new information over a period of time.

Doyle, cont. • What students’ brains need to function: • Oxygen—brain uses up to 30% of total energy the body produces • Water • Glucose—food • Movement and Exercise • Moving is the best activity to increase learning • Moving stimulates synaptic growth • Benefit of moving lasts 6-7 hours • Our brains are at their best when we’re in motion

Doyle, cont. • Sleep • Memories are made during sleep • No “screens” before bed! • Studying 30 minutes before going to bed will help the information store into your long-term memory. • Allows us to reorganize and reconfigure memories. • Brain clears space for new learning. • ↓ sleep ↓ GPA • If you’re sleepy in class, neurons switch off

  7. Doyle, cont. • Naps are very helpful • NASA—27-minute naps best • Rest periods after lunch are good (siesta) • Ideally, no 8:00 or back-to-back classes

  9. Approach • Interpersonal is a wonderful class because you learn about yourself, others, and how to nurture and improve personal and professional relationships. • We are all responsible for learning in the class. • Engage!!!

  10. Class Expectations • Attend class • Keep cell phones put away • Read the chapter(s) before class meetings • Be prepared to discuss and participate • If you are struggling with school or something else, please let me know! • Complete all the assignments • Do your own work and do it well!

  11. Class Expectations • Stay awake • If you do not know how to use the following computer programs/systems, get help: • Angel • Word • PowerPoint • How to download a Word document from Angel • How to upload a Word document into Angel • Basic computer literacy is necessary in college!
