Block Schedule/ Course Selection • Operating on a 4 x 4 block schedule, SJHS enables students to take a minimum of eight courses per year or four per term. • Students should work with their parents/guardians and school guidance counselors to determine the most appropriate and beneficial route of progress for high school completion. • Course selection is based on grades, test scores, pre-requisites, teacher recommendations, interviews, etc. • Course descriptions and pre-requisites can be found in the Program of Study.

  4. Post Secondary Decisions Students need to decide what they plan to do after high school so they can take the appropriate classes during high school. Workforce 2 Year/Technical college 4 Year college

  5. Graduation Requirements(2 year technical college or workforce) • 4 units of English • 4 units of math • 3 units of science • 3 units of social studies • 1 unit of physical education/ROTC • 1 unit of computer science • 1 unit of Foreign Language or CATE • 7 electives

College Requirements (4 year) • 4 English • 4 Math (Algebra I and II, geometry and a fourth higher level math ) • *3 Sciences (*lab sciences, does NOT include physical science) • *2/3 Foreign Languages • 1 P.E./ROTC • 3 Social Studies (US History, Gov/ Econ and 1 other) • 1 Computer Science • 1 Fine Arts • Academic Electives – college preparatory units taken from three different fields are encouraged. • 19 Total

  7. Grade Classifications • Grade 9 to 10: The student will be eligible for promotion from grade 9 to 10 if he/she successfully completes five Carnegie units, one in Mathematics and one in English.

  8. Grade Classifications • Grade 10 to 11: The student will be eligible for promotion from grade 10 to 11 if he/she successfully completes eleven Carnegie units which includes a cumulative minimum of two Carnegie units in Mathematics and two in English.

Grade Classifications • Grade 11 to 12: The student will be eligible for promotion from grade 11 to 12 if he/she successfully completes sixteen Carnegie units that meet state requirements for graduation which includes a cumulative minimum of three Carnegie units in Mathematics, three in English, two in Science, and two in Social Studies.

  10. Tests

  11. HSAP • The High School Assessment Program tests each student’s reading, writing and math abilities. Students must pass this test as a part of the graduation requirements. Students will take this test beginning in the spring of their second year in high school.

  12. EOC (End of Course) • Students will take an EOC at the end of the following courses: • Algebra 1 or Math Tech 2 • English 1 • Biology • US History • This exam will count 20% of the final grade

  13. PSAT • Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test is given to select 10th and 11th grade students. Other students can choose to take the test for a small fee. Test results show projected scores on the SAT, the college admission test. This test is used to qualify for National Merit Scholarships during 11th grade.

  14. PLAN PLAN is the second part of a testing system that starts with EXPLORE and ends with the ACT. PLAN is not only a predictor for the ACT, it also serves as a career assessment which allows students to explore career/training options, and make plans for the remaining years of high school and post-graduation years. All 10th grade students will take PLAN.

  15. SAT • SAT is a test of general reasoning abilities that are developed both in and out of school. This test is a multiple-choice test made up of separately timed verbal, and mathematical sections. There is also a writing portion that consists of multiple choice and essay. SAT is offered several times during the year at locations throughout Horry County. Students sign up on their own for the SAT.

  16. ACT • The ACT is an assessment test that measures a student’s skill in English, mathematics, reading, and science. This is also a multiple choice test that is used for college admissions. ACT is offered several times during the year at locations throughout Horry County. Students sign up for ACT on their own as well.

  17. Advanced Placement • Advanced Placement Program is a collaborative effort between motivated students, dedicated teachers and committed high schools, colleges and universities. Courses are taught on a college level to high school students. These students are able to achieve college credit pending the outcome of the May AP tests. Students may begin AP courses as early as 9th grade.

Dual Enrollment (PACE) The Program for Accelerated College Enrollment (PACE) provides opportunities for qualified high school juniors and seniors to get a head start on college by taking college credit courses that will also meet graduation requirements. Dual Enrollment classes are offered on all 3 HGTC campuses Please see your counselor to see if you are eligible and for more information

  20. Career Clusters Horry County Schools offers a variety of career clusters that can be taken at base schools or the academies. St James offers 12 of the 16 clusters with various majors under each cluster. Students must complete 4 units in a specified area to obtain completer status in a major.
