  2. A bit about Co-Action Publishing • Established as Swedish limited liability company in 2007 by three former executives from academic publishing industry • Affiliate office in Norway • Founding Member Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association, OASPA, current President • Publish journals across disciplines, including Social Sciences and the Humanities, but primarily medicine • 7 employees; publishing 36 journals • Business philosophy & culture based on • Swedish values

  3. Copernicus PLoS BMC Hindawi Publishing Scientific Publishing MedKnow

  4. Fewcompetitors • Brandingimportantbut less importantthantoday. • Simplybeing an OA publisherwasdistinctive.

  5. On theother hand, communicationswereveryimportant. In the form of advocacy (education) • Focusedprimarilyondefiningthings like green vs. Gold OA. Dispellingmyths and correctinginaccurate or false information. • To build a market. • Veryuseful to cooperatewithotherpublishers and to point to theirgoodwork. – OASPA!

  6. Established OA publishers • New pure OA publishers • Mega journals and mega projects • Universitylibrary hosting and publishing services • Small OA publishers • Legacy publisherswith OA portfolios

  7. Having a branding and communicationstrategy is nowcritical. • Differentiation • Clearlydefine services • Define Open Access at ourcompany • Price justification

  8. ”…a pointpublishersshould be awareof in thecoming Open Access erawhereindividuals, not institutions, willcontroleconomicdecisionmakingpower in the form ofArticle Processing Charges (APC). Authors willincreasinglydemand real service for their APCs, like anyotherproductthatyoupay for as a lab manager. Publishers who do not deliver a good “product” in terms ofdoingtheirjob in handling manuscripts, typesetting, hosting, etc. willfindthattheyarenow in a competitivemarket and authorswhodon’tget a good service willtaketheirmoneyelsewhere.”

  9. For Co-Action Publishing advocacywork is still important as part ofthatstrategy • In relation to socialsciences & humanities • In relation to societies • To define nuances in Open Access publishing (e.g. Licensing) • To build support for different paymentmodels • As part ofpositioningcompany

  10. Alsosmallpublishers must be awareofcurrentdiscourse and be prepared to respond to claims and actionsofothers. • Alignwithloudvoiceswhere/whenweagreewiththem. • Engagelocallywherewecan have a loudvoice. • Think creatively to embracesmall • And embracebeing a pure OA publisher

  11. Thankyou! Caroline.Sutton@co-action.net
