  3. WHY IS JUNETEENTH CELEBRATED? • Symbolizes the end of slavery • Symbolizes freedom for African-Americans • Honors African-American ancestors who survived bondage

  4. WHERE IS JUNETEENTH CELEBRATED? • Texas • Arkansas • Louisiana • Oklahoma • Other communities across the nation have adopted the holiday as well

  5. HOW IS JUNETEENTH COMMEMORATED? • In Austin, Juneteenth was first celebrated in 1867 under the direction of the Freedmen’s Bureau and became part of the calendar of public events by 1872 • In 1976, Houston’s Juneteenth Blues Festival began offering free concerts at the Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park.
