  1. Mitosis & Meiosis

  2. The Human Life Cycle Involves • 1) Growth • Mitosis- a nuclear division of a parental cell that produces two daughter cells with the same chromosome number as the parental cell. (2N= 46) • 2) Reproduction • Meiosis- two nuclear divisions of a parental cell that produces four daughter cells with half the chromosome number as the parental cell. (N= 23)

  3. Cell Cycle • Cell cycle consists of: • Interphase • Mitosis- nuclear division. • Cytokinesis- cytoplasmic division.

You may see blank slides in the “Normal” or “Slide Sorter” views. All animations will appear after viewing in Presentation Mode and playing each animation. Most animations will require the latest version of the Flash Player, which is available at http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer.

  6. Mitosis 4 Stages to Mitosis- PMAT. • Prophase • Metaphase • Anaphase • Telophase

  9. Meiosis • Meiosis consists of two successive nuclear divisions. • Genetic material between homologous chromatids is exchanged. • The product of meiosis is four haploid nuclei.

  10. Homologous chromosomes- chromosomes that associate in pairs in the first stage of meiosis (Prophase I); each member of the pair is derived from a different parent.

  11. Genetic Exchange • Synapsis- the pairing of homologous chromosomes. • Crossing-over- the exchange of genetic material between homologous chromatids.

  12. Crossing Over- Meiosis I
