  2. STATE GOAL 23. • Understand human body systems and factors that influence growth and development.

  3. Why This Goal Is Important: • To achieve healthful individual development, students need to understand human anatomy and physiology, nutrition, stages of growth and development, avoidance of harmful actions and the characteristics of good health habits. Early learners begin with basic recognition of body systems and growth stages. As students progress, they understand how systems work together and how individual actions affect health. As they themselves grow and develop, students can learn to enhance the process throughout their school years and later life.

  4. Objective • Students will: • Learn about parts of the body and • Create a life size paper model of the human body’s parts. • This model can be a s sophisticated as the student might make it, which is why this is such a great activity for use across the grades

  5. Key words • Body, Human body, heart, intestines, brain, anatomy

  6. Materials Needed • A roll of Kraft paper • Miscellaneous art supplies

  7. Procedure • Have students work in pairs to complete the first part of this activity. Provide each student with a sheet of Kraft paper about 6 inches longer that the student's height

  8. Procedure Cont. 2. Tell the pairs of students that one will lie down on the sheet of paper. The student’s arms and the body. Tell that student to stay very still while the other student traces the outline of the body with a dark crayon or marker. Then have the students switch places and trace the other student’s body.

  9. Procedure Cont. 3. Help students cut their body silhouettes and write their names on the back.

  10. Procedure Cont. 4. As the class studies each part of the body, have each student create a paper model of the part and attach it in its correct position to the silhouette. As the students’ study progresses, the silhouettes become life-size models

  11. EARLY ELEMENTARY • Identify basic parts of body systems and their functions (e.g., heart, lungs, eyes.

  12. EARLY ELEMENTARY • Identify healthy actions that influence the functions of the body (e.g., cleanliness, proper diet, exercise).

  13. Assessment • Evaluate students on their ability to identify the different parts of the body and the roles those body parts play
