  1. How Much Elementary Mathematics Training from an Advanced Standpointdo Mathematics Teachers Need? Tomás Ortega Luis Puig U. Valladolid U. Valencia Didáctica de la Matemática

  3. Theoretical Approach. Deans' Conference Interest and concern on the part of the Spanish Society for Mathematical Research (SEIEM) First Meeting of Deans and Directors of Mathematics Departments (2000) “The coordination between the study of Mathematics at the university level (both in Mathematics degrees and other degrees) and secondary-level teaching is inadequate.” Proposed solutions are unrelated to Mathematics

  5. Theoretical Approach. Deans' Conference • At the Second Meeting of Deans and Directors of Mathematics Departments (2000), SEIEM, as invited speaker, issued an appeal for the creation of a series of core studies which would later branch into three different orientations with regard to degrees in Mathematics: • University professor • Specialization in applied mathematical models • Secondary school teacher • Proposal accepted by the Tuning Project (2003). Reformulated as Academic Profile, Applied Profile and Teaching Profile at the VII SEIEM (Granada, 2004)

  7. Theoretical Approach. Teaching Itinerary The Spanish Subcommittee of the International Commission on Mathematics Instruction (ICMI_E) held a seminar titled ATeaching Itinerary in the Degree in Mathematics (Granada, 2004) to analyze the third profile of the degree in Mathematics and design pertinent guidelines. The first general competence set, was it. “The knowledge of mathematical content for secondary education from the perspective of higher mathematics education and the mastery of this knowledge in the realm of teaching and learning.” (Recio, 2004, 35)

(Recio, 2004, 36).

  9. Theoretical Approach. Teaching Itinerary The Seminar acknowledges that part of the secondary curriculum content is not covered in current university studies. The Klein Project again appears in the proposal for content modules. “First Module: The Foundations of Mathematics in Secondary Education from the perspective of Higher Education, including philosophic, historical and epistemological considerations as well as in relation to Physics, Biology, Economics, etc.” (Recio, 2004, 36)

  11. Theoretical Approach. Consultation Document • The Deans' Conference (under the auspices of the ANECA) authorizes the creation of a consultation documentto be used when designing future degrees in Mathematics adapted to the European Higher Education Area. • 144 (of a total of 240) ECTS credits will be assigned to basic core subjects pertaining to the “five general areas of mathematical knowledge”. • “This is not to be interpreted as a closed catalogue of orientations: each University will organize them as best suits their own circunstances and objectives” (ANECA, 2004, 125).

  13. Theoretical Approach. Consultation Document • Eight professional profiles: university teacher o researcher; non-university teacher; public administration; banking, finance and insurance; industry; consulting agencies; telecommunications; business and other organizations. • Transverse competences (instrumental, personal and systemic) and specific competences (subject-related, professional, academic, etc.). • As most graduates go on to become “secondary education teachers”, the related competences are characterized by an excessively academic bent. Furthermore, they are distributed among seven options in a rather arbitrary manner.

  15. Theoretical Approach. Consultation Document • An example of transverse competences • The competences for non-university-level teaching are the same as those for banking, finance and insurance, with the following exceptions: • Problem solving and Identification of diversity and multiculturality are on the first list, but not the second. • Team work and Analysis and synthesis capabilities are on the second list, but not the first. • How effective will secondary school teachers be if they do not internalize the competences assigned to banking?

  17. Theoretical Approach. Professional Organizations The Federation of Math Teachers' Organizations is hopeful and reflects the spirit of the Granada Seminar: “We have a chance to make things better by breaking with the routines and inertia of the past.” (García Cuesta, 2009) The Education Commission of the Royal Spanish Mathematics Society (Millavibarrena, 2009) highlights the importance of following the Klein Project when developing the content of the Secondary Education curriculum. It indicates that Complements of Mathematics (a subject included in the Master in Secondary Education) should be designed to assure that the candidates canteach the subjects assigned to them in a most satisfactory manner”.

  19. The Present Degree Program In the secondary education curriculum there are many topics that our graduates have never studied at university. If the Master or other courses do not remedy this situation, future math teachers will have to teach these contents using the knowledge they acquired in secondary school. At present there are contents that were not present in their syllabi. Thus they will lack adequate preparation for the teaching profession.

  21. The Present Degree Program. Interview • Two students in the Master in Secondary Education program, one holding a degree in Physics (P) and the other in Mathematics (M), were asked a wide range of questions about the contents taught in University courses. The answers were almost always the same: • M. In Math we don't study anything about that. • P. Nor in Physics. • In some cases there were explanations, such as the following. • 1. With regard to conic sections: • M. In Mathematics we only deal with this from an algebraic standpoint: finding the invariants that classify them. • P. In Physics we don't study that.

  22. Situación real de los grados. Entrevista • 2.

  23. The Present Degree Program. Interview • 2. Regarding information gathering and data representation: • M. In Mathematics, not as something specific. • P. In Physics, laboratory data. • 3. Regarding Problem Solving, both interviewees agree: • Each instructor solves problems relating to his course material; only a few offer ideas, strategies and tecniques for solving problems related to their subject. • Both interviewees agreed that content in courses leading to their degree was presented exclusively from a mathematical perspective, without taking into account secondary school curricula.

  25. The Present Degree Program Survey • High school teachers responded that: • The mathematics taught at university are overly theoretical and have very little practical application. • University graduates must study a large amount of subject matter on their own as they were not exposed to it at university. • The objectives of the degree program are not designed with future teachers in mind; instead they are geared to scientists. There should be a specific degree for those desiring to be secondary school teachers. • They were not taught how to transmit knowledge. Only the subjects studied in the first year of their degree and several from the second year were suitable for Mathematics teachers.

  27. Master in Secondary Education • ORDER ECI/3858/2007 creates three general content modules: • General. Psychopedagogical and social content. • Specific. Complementary Training in Mathematics. Studies in the Teaching of Mathematics, Classroom Innovation and Introduction to Pedagogical Research. • Practicum. (Student teaching in each specific field and a research project). • Twelve to fourteen ECTS credits are assigned to this module for complementary training in Mathematics. However, there is no list of minimal contents; the content is established independently by each university .

  29. Master in SecondaryEducation. Questionnaire • Seventeen Spanish universities were asked how they had set up the Complementary Training in Mathematics. From their answers we have learned that: • Courses are assigned arbitrarily. • Course content differs from one university to another. • The orientation changes from one university to another, depending on the strength and generosity of the five great areas of mathematical knowledge, the governing body of each university, and the availability of instructors from the Mathematics Teaching Department. • All the universities consulted have a course dealing at least in part with the History of Mathematics.

  31. Master in Secondary Education. Questionnaire • Three profiles have been identified with regard to Complementary Mathematics Training depending on which Department designed the course of study: • The content taught by the Department of Mathematics Teaching adapt to Klein's orientation. • In content taught jointly by the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Mathematics Teaching Klein's ideas are present to a greater or lesser extent. • In content taught exclusively by Departments of Mathematics, there is token reference to secondary education. No intention is made to train students to become secondary school teachers. The content is appropriate for undergraduate courses.

  33. Master in Secondary Education. Questionnaire The instructors who teach upper-level course content say that some students had difficulty with the complementary courses because they either did not know or did not remember many things. Only in one university was the course titled Classroom Innovation designed by the Department of General Education and taken by all the students enrolled in the Master (whether their degree be in Mathematics, Biology, Spanish, Literature).

  35. Master in Secondary Education This Master should never try to complete the professional content which should have been dealt with during the degree program. This occurs because the Mathematics Teaching Itinerary is not being put into practice. In our opinion, if future secondary education teachers are to receive adequate instruction, such studies should be a complement to their training and not the only instruction they receive.

  37. The subject “Complements… ” at the University of Valencia (6 ECTS) The subject Complements for the Disciplinary Training (in Mathematics) is the first part of the Specific content Module of the Master in Secondary Education. This subject is designed to make a whole with the other subjects of the Module, Teaching and Learning of Mathematics, and Educational Innovation and Introduction to Educational Research in Mathematics […] This subject deals with the study of some mathematical elements which are needed to acquire a suitable knowledge of the problematics of teaching and learning the mathematical content of Secondary Education, and which are needed to develop innovative and effective teaching proposals for this subject matters.

  39. The subject “Complements… ” at the University of Valencia (6 ECTS) • The use of Mathematical models, contexts and situations allows a phenomenological approach to the teaching of mathematics in Secondary Education, which helps students to understand mathematical concepts, properties and procedures, and to know and experience their usefulness as a tool to solve problems of science and technology. • Knowing the historical evolution and the epistemology of mathematical ideas enables prospective mathematics teachers to have a deeper view of the mathematical content they will have to teach. At the same time it will give them a referent to analyse pupils’ learning processes and difficulties.

(Klein, 1939, p. 1)

  43. Klein’s purpose I shall give the whole a somewhat different tone: In the foreground I shall place, let me say, the encyclopedic ideal–you will be offered a survey of the entire field of geometry into which you can arrange, as into a rigid frame, all the separate items of knowledge which you have acquired in the course of your study. (Klein, 1939, p. 1)

(Klein, 1939, p. 2)

  45. Klein’s purpose • Two basic instruments: • - Use of history • - A “fusion of arithmetic and geometry” Last semester I endeavoured always to enliven the abstract discussions of arithmetic, algebra and analysis by means of figures and graphic methods, […]. Similarly, I shall now, from the very beginning, accompany space perception, which, of course, will hold first place, with analytic formulas, which facilitate in the highest degree the precise formulation of geometric facts. (Klein, 1939, p. 2)

  47. Klein’s purpose To treat elementary geometry from an advanced standpoint, Klein intends to open simultaneously what we call nowadays in computer environments (symbolic calculators, GeoGebra) two windows: the graphic window, and the algebraic window. The situation of the teaching of mathematics by the time of Klein seems to lead him to stress the algebraic window. The graphical one will hold first place, however the algebraic window allows “the precise formulation of geometric facts”.

  48. Un propósito de Klein

  49. Klein’s purpose
