  1. Chemistry and Physics OGT Blitz

  2. Warm-up Brain Conflict

  3. Right side - identifies the color • Left side - identifies the word • This conflictin information processing must be sorted – so the process becomes slower

  4. Atoms • Atoms make up all of the elements • They contain sub-atomic particles theproton + theelectron _ theneutron

  5. The Periodic Table

  6. The Metals

  7. Mercury Hg Iron Fe

  8. Metals are shiny • Good electrical conductors • Ductile (can be pulled into a wire) • Malleable (able to be hammered) • They are the largest group of elements

  9. The Non - Metals

  10. Carbon C Sulfur S

  11. Non-metals are dull in appearance • They are poor electrical conductors • They are brittle and break if hammered

  12. The Metalloids

  13. Silicon Si Germanium Ge

  14. They have properties of both a metal & non-metal • Used in the computer industry because of these unique capabilities

  15. Electron Orbitals

  16. The Valence Electrons A Better Look

  17. Valence means “strength” • The valence shell is the outermost shell • This shell holds the reactive electrons • These are the guys that get involved in chemical reactions • These outer electrons are called the valence electrons

  18. 1 4 7 How many valence electrons ?

  19. Lewis Dot Diagrams

  20. Lewis dots are used to represent valence electrons • They are placed in groups of 1 or 2 electrons on the appropriate four sides of an element 8 electrons means a full valence shell

  21. Lithium has 3 electrons but only 1 is a valence electron – as shown

  22. Beryllium has 4 electrons but only 2 are valence electrons

  23. OGT Element Questions

  24. OGT Properties Questions

  25. Reactions

  26. Five types: 1. Synthesis 2. Decomposition 3. Single Replacement 4. Double Replacement 5. Combustion

  27. Synthesis Tw0 or more substances that combine and synthesize a new compound H2+ O2H2O2 C + 2 H2CH4

  28. Decompositon– opposite of synthesis Compound is decomposedinto two or more simpler substances 2 H2O 2H2 + O2 2 Ag2O  4 Ag + O2
