  1. University Outreach Business Plan From the University Outreach Ad Hoc Susan K. Tatiner SEC Meeting 3 Nov 2011

  2. Outline • University Outreach Business Plan • Future slate of products and services • Motion to endorse requested

  3. University Outreach Business Plan • Business Plan developed after University Outreach visits to determine what would be useful to universities for introducing “the importance of standards" into the engineering course curriculum. • Full Business Plan contains • Business description • Listings of current and future products and services • Market analysis • Financial data

  4. Future slate of products and services • Recommended future slate includes existing, new, and adapted products and services. • Case studies • Training Certificate program for academic professionals • Standards videos • Distributed content in coursework • Group meetings • Student Application Papers • The Faculty Lounge • A new web “room on the Standards Education web site recommended as a home for the University–Level products and services • Feature the Faculty Lounge prominently in the eZine • Cater to one of our most important resources in University-Level Standards Education … professors

  5. Case studies • Most popular suggestion from professors for post-graduate student standards education product. • First such case study currently being written. • Business Plan recommends development of a proposal to John Wiley and Sons for an IEEE Press-Wiley textbook of standards case studies. • Ancillary material to help professors use case studies also should be developed. • Financials: • Wiley arrangement would net small return; no financial outlay for IEEE.

  6. Training Certificate program for academic professionals • Academic portion of a larger, scalable, fee-based, revenue-generating program that could be licensed in multiple geographies. • Standards Education materials to be delivered in workshops, with testing and certificates for successful completion. • Meets demand expressed in University Outreach visits, but additional market research recommended before proceeding. • Financials: • Business Plan suggests sharing development costs with an external partner (such as CNIS, in China) and using New Initiatives Process to fund IEEE portion of development.

  7. Standards videos • Professors would welcome lecturers to deliver basic material about standards to undergrads. • Videos are a way to reach larger audience. • Business Plan recommends developing a short series of video lectures on standards basics to be made available on the website at no charge. • Following the basic set, a second set of Standards videos with interviews of technology experts working in standards development is recommended. • Financials: • It is assumed that we can keep costs down with donations of in-kind services, and that the OUs will be able to handle our costs through operational budgets.

  8. Distributed content in coursework • Using the “distributed model” for Standards Education was a key finding of our outreach. • Many ways to do this, including making use of existing material, such as the online case illustrations and tutorials, and SA’s recently completed Video Case Studies. • Business Plan recommends • Continuing our efforts on content for Senior Project courses • Developing standards chapters for existing popular engineering texts • Creating ancillary materials for professors • Financials: • Allowing for a slow build of this material, the EA and SA OUs’ annual operational budgets can be used effectively to develop this material.

  9. Group meetings • Group meetings would continue to play important role • Industry seminars: Guest speakers from industry at pre-existing student events. • Technology workshops: Using successful “Demystifying …” format, SEC can bring workshops to universities or groups of universities. • Financials: • Wise use of meeting accommodations and Standards Education Speakers Bureau funds will allow us to continue strong tradition of Standards Education in group meetings.

  10. Student Application Papers • Business Plan recommends research to understand why the Student Application Papers program has failed to expand as widely anticipated. • Also recommended is continued exploration of partnerships with corporate entities in various geographies. • Financials: • Traditionally, EA operational budget has funded the Student Application Papers program, with some recent corporate funding. It is anticipated that SA research staff could be used for the first recommendation.

  11. Motion to endorse requested • SEC is asked for a motion to endorse the recommendations in the University Outreach Business Plan and to request that the University Outreach Ad Hoc pursue them in 2012.
