  1. University Outreach Update for SEC: April 2011 David Law Susan K. Tatiner

  2. Purpose of University Outreach according to SA Strategic Plan • To determine what would be useful to universities for introducing “the importance of standards" into the engineering course curriculum • To develop a business plan for products and/or services based on input gathered from university outreach efforts

  3. Universities visited to date … • Tsinghua University (Beijing) • Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunication (Beijing) • Princess Sumaya University for Technology (Amman, Jordan) • Yarmouk University (Irbid, Jordan) • DeVry University (North Brunswick, NJ) • JamiaMilliaIslamia University (New Delhi) • Delhi Technology University (New Delhi) • India Institute of Science (Bangalore) • Indian Institutes of Information Technology(Bangalore) • University of Strathclyde (Glasgow) • Durham University (Newcastle, UK) • Kingston University (London) • Imperial College London • Queen Mary University (London)

  4. UK trip in March • Five schools in three days: Steve Mills, David Law, Susan Tatiner, Moira Patterson • Breadth of engagement with standards • From Strathclyde’s impressive, embedded, hybrid program • To Imperial College’s open, embracing attitude: Show us how • Where the school stands on the practical-analytical continuum is key • Case studies were a popular potential offering (as they were in India) • Video lectures got a mixed review • And new ideas emerged about readability issues, assessment help for professors, and internships

  5. Activities remaining • Visit additional U.S. universities (Spring 2011) • California trip? UC, Berkeley; Santa Clara U; San Jose State U • Elsewhere? Recommendations? Contacts? • Analyze data (Summer 2011) • Opportunities to present findings (Summer 2011) • Annual ICES (International Cooperation for Education about Standards) conference in Hangzhou, China, in late June • CNIS (China National Institute of Standards) conference in Beijing, China, immediately after • Complete report (Fall 2011) • Develop business plan to help guide our work (Winter 2011)
