  3. Remember your Hook notes, in your ELA notebook What is your HOOK? How are you going to get the reader to want to keep reading?? I choose a quote: Malcolm S. Forbes: “Education’s purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one. Sydney J. Harris: “The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows.”

  4. Introducing your topic • What is your topic? • What does that mean? Acquiring new and useful skills is essential to the development of all children.

  5. What strands of geography influence your topic? • Does geography influence education? How? • Does the history of the country influence education? How? • Does the government influence education? How? • Does the economics of the country influence education? How? • Does daily life, religion, social groups (behavioral science) influence education? How? Background Knowledge • Afghanistan is a landlocked country located in central Asia. • Decades of war and drought have devastated the cities and surrounding lands. • Many schools were destroyed but children, boys and girls, still try to attend when and where they can. • Afghanistan is currently a democracy with a president and two vice presidents, but they still have issues with the Taliban and civil wars.

  6. Thesis Statement What is your position on the topic? **remember your yellow sheet can help you answer this! Education in Afghanistan is difficult for children to access.

  7. All together now…… Took out a fact, because I didn’t think that is appropriate to the paragraph. Malcolm S. Forbes: “Education’s purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.” Acquiring new and useful skills is essential to the development of all children. Decades of war and drought have devastated the cities in Afghanistan and surrounding lands. Many schools were destroyed but children, boys and girls, still try to attend when and where they can. Afghanistan is currently a democracy with a president and two vice presidents, but they still have issues with the Taliban and civil wars. Unfortunately, education in Afghanistan is difficult for children to access. Added the proper noun Afghanistan Added a transition word and a comma

  8. Now you are ready to write!
