Informal Language • Informal language makes use of slang terms and colloquialisms, it is often referred to as being conversational. • Informal language can be used in casual settings such as speaking with family, friends and peers at school. • Grammar and vocabulary are not focused on. • Sentences are shorter with minimal information provided • Contractions and first point of view perspectives are acceptable. • Informal language is too casual for academic writing in high school and university.

  3. Formal Language • For academic writing, always use formal language • Formal language is impersonal and provides precise details to the reader • In formal writing, sentences should be carefully constructed without the use of contractions. • Use the 3rd person (he, she, they, one)

  4. Strong Introductory Paragraph Catches the interest of the reader • Introduces topic • States title and director’s name • Introduce the 3 supporting points. Each point should have their own statement that will be discussed further throughout the essay • States the thesis statement

  5. A Strong Thesis Statement The strong thesis statement is the foundation for any essay. Make sure that you include all the necessary aspects of your argument. Your thesis should always include: the director’s name, the title of the film and your argument Example:

  6. Example Topic: Assertion: Topic + Assertion = your thesis

  7. 2nd, 3rd & 4th Body Paragraphs • Develops one aspect of the thesis statement in further detail • Topic sentence, • Point, proof (specific examples and quotations) , explanation • Make sure it directly links to the thesis! • Use transition words throughout • Concluding sentence

  11. Our Topic: Symbolism in Stranger Than Fiction We know symbolism exists in the film Stranger Than Fiction. • So what? • Why is symbolism important in the film ? • Avoid plot summary move toward the analytical process

  12. In Class Essay • Viewing notes • Brainstorming • Point form outline (no full sentences) • 1 period to write on Friday April 1st in the Lab • Be sure to bring outline+ brainstorming, viewing notes.

  13. Brainstorm Symbols In groups of 4 or 5 brainstorm symbols shown in the film. How can the symbols be grouped? • Start working on your thesis statement. • Do not start your outline until your thesis has been checked!
