  1. Welcome to Sixth Grade!2014-15 This is the beginning of an exciting time for you and your student. Sixth grade is classified by the state of Texas as middle school, but in AISD, they are housed at the elementary level. Our goal this year is to prepare your child for middle school, teach the mandated state curriculum, and build positive relationships with our students.

  5. PLEASE DON’T WORRY! This presentation will help you both survive 6th Grade!

  6. HOMEROOM 7:55 - 8:05 Students arrive to school and go to their Homeroom class to take attendance, make their lunch choice, and begin Prime Time activities.

  7. What is Prime Time? Prime Time is a time for intervention/enrichment for all 6th Grade students. This is also a time for students to receive, Speech, additional Resource time, Dyslexia Therapy, ESL instruction, and SSI intervention.

  8. PRIME TIME ACTIVITIESALSO INCLUDE… Time to finish homework Get help from all teachers with questions on any assignments. Got to the Library. Read Pay lunch money Restroom

  9. Absences Allen ISD requires parents to send a HANDWRITTEN note stating the reason for any absence so students may be excused. Please contact us or Mrs. Dade by e-mail before 10:00 a.m. so we can gather your student’s work from all classes and send it to Mrs. Dade’s desk for you.

  10. VISITING? Please sign in at the receptionist’s desk and wear a visitor’s badge while you are here. Please enter through the front door as all side doors are to remain locked during the school day in order to provide a safe learning environment for your child.

  11. RESPONSIBILITY CARD Your child receives a new Responsibility card on Monday of each week. The card is returned on Friday before Specials. The card will be stapled in the Tuesday folder. PLEASE READ THE BACK OF THE CARD AND RETURN IT TO SCHOOL along with the Tuesday folder.

  12. Mrs. Fowler’s ClassSixth Grade Language Arts • The Language Arts Curriculum is based on the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) as required by the state of Texas.

  13. Reading Focus • Main idea, details, summarization • Prefixes, suffixes, roots, base words • Fact/Non-fact/Opinion • Inference and logical conclusions • Author’s purpose • Point of View • Genre studies • Persuasive Devices

  14. Written Communication Focus • The Writing Process includes the stages of prewriting, composing, evaluating, revising, editing, and publishing a final product. • Grammar includes the eight parts of speech • Capitalization and punctuation • Increasing spelling knowledge – no spelling tests in 6th Grade

  15. CLASSWORK /HOMEWORK • Independent reading – One novel from a specific genre is assigned each 9 weeks and students will complete a Tic-Tac-Toe/menu to demonstrate what they learned. • Target Reading – Students have daily think sheets and a quiz each Friday. • Spring Board assignments are primarily done in class, but students may have to complete unfinished work at home. • Word Work – Students will focus on word parts followed by a vocabulary quiz.

  16. STAAR Test 2015 STAAR Math – April 21, 2015 STAAR Reading – April 22, 2015 Students are given one opportunity to take each test. This is one piece of criteria that determines eligibility for Pre-AP courses in 7th Grade Students have four hours to test.

  17. GRADES Homework and Classwork are 60% Quizzes and Tests are 40% Graded work is sent home each week and can be corrected for up to a 70%. Please check Skyward via Parent Access for grades and notifications and Tuesday folders weekly.

  18. Skyward Access Family Access via Skyward is the way to keep up with your child’s academic progress throughout the year. We encourage you to check it daily to evaluate your child’s progress. You will see your child’s current grades, class and homework assignments, tests, and upcoming due dates.
