  1. FGM report9th Cross calibration workshopElizabeth Lucek, Patrick Brown, Paul French, Chris Carr, Tim Oddy, André Balogh Imperial College London March 25th 2009

  2. Management changes • Paul French joined the team as the FGM Archive Scientist in Nov 2008 CAA status of data submission • Primary FGM data delivered to CAA: Feb 2001 – April 2008 • Magnetic field data: Full resolution, 5 vectors/second, spin averaged • Calibration of range 5 data is now routine • Supporting files: GAPF (data gaps in processed data); VALF (data gaps introduced at validation stage – small number, generally only affects a few vectors at a time) • Supporting FGM files delivered to CAA: Feb 2001 – Dec 2006 • CAVF: caveat files provided only when data quality is affected by external effects • CALA: calibration accuracy files • CAVF and CALA files currently outstanding for Jan 2007 – April 2008 • Remaining supporting files will be prepared in short term

  3. FGM CAA documentation • Sources of documentation for FGM and FGM data • Interface Control Document (ICD) • New ICD delivered to the CAA (CAA_FGM_ICD_0002_V0_4) • FGM User Guide • V 1.0 delivered to the CAA in January 2009 • Cross-Calibration report • V 1.0 delivered to the CAA in January 2009 • Description of calibration procedure • Revised paper prepared in March 2009 for proceedings of Tenerife workshop

  4. Open issues: High priority • Problem with error in spin axis offset • Effect: up to 1 nT discrepancy in B in solar wind • Data affected: Mar 2002; First half Jan 2003; First half Feb 2003 • Thought to arise from either: • Error in application of solar wind calibration (Jan, Feb 2003) • Insufficient solar wind data to yield good spin axis offsets (Mar 2002) • V02 data from Jan and Feb 2003 prepared • CAVF files for March 2002 prepared • Data will be delivered when automatic ssh delivery procedure is running again • OPEN • Outstanding CAVF and CALA files for Jan 2007 – April 2008 • Delivery of these files will be completed in the medium term • No problems anticipated • OPEN

  5. Open Issues: Medium priority • Routine generation of CAVF files • Most of the software is written • Redelivery of some CAVF files might be necessary • OPEN • Delivery of data from Nov 2000 – Jan 2001 • Plan to prepare these data using subset of calibration pipeline if time allows • OPEN

  6. Open Issues: Lower priority • Preparation of data for summer 2001 incorporating inter-spacecraft calibration • Significant improvement not found to date; will be looked at once more to assess whether V02 files will be prepared • OPEN • Calibration refinement files – for use in following changes in calibration parameters in a single orbit • Software written and tested, but not ready for routine use • Development will continue if time allows, but we will still give priority to delivery of data and supporting products • OPEN

  7. Future Schedule NS – Nightside : May – October, DS – Dayside : November – April • Shaded region: completed data delivery, but CAVF and CALA files outstanding • Results of solar wind calibration of data from Jan 2009 for spin axis offset needed for preparation of data from NS 08, thus there has been a pause in data delivery • Data preparation has now recommenced • All datasets up to and including NS 08 expected to be delivered by review in May 2009

  8. Update on Open Action items from 2008 Review Board AI for ALL TEAMS • T1: lack of caveat information • FGM caveat information is routinely prepared • T2: confirmation requested that all supporting products needed for full interpretation of CAA data are provided e.g. HK • FGM data products in the CAA do have all necessary supporting data products • T3: formal report requested on calibration and cross-calibration activities • V1.0 of Calibration report submitted to CAA Jan 2009 • T4: brief user guide requested • V 1.0 of FGM User Guide submitted to CAA Jan 2009 • T5: reminder to teams that all data from years 2001 – 2009 be provided to the CAA before June 2010 • Data from Feb 2001 – April 2008 delivered • Calibration of May – Oct 2008 required solar wind data from Jan 2009 for spin axis offset monitoring • Calibration has now recommenced, delivery schedule satisfies data delivery requirement 8th Cross calibration workshop October 28th 2008

  9. Update on Open Action items from 8th Cross-Calibration meeting - 1 AI for ALL TEAMS • CC8-AI-1: prepare draft layout of instrument papers they wish to include in the book • FGM is likely to prepare one paper describing how the instrument is calibrated, and describing how the calibration parameters change in time • CC8-AI-6: propose suggestions for cross calibration plots • FGM has no special wishes • CC8-AI-7: propose suggestions for survey plots • Bx, By, Bz, |B| would be appropriate, but variances of B and |B| are also useful • Some plasma parameters, such as  and Alfvén velocity would also be useful • CC8-AI-8: present ideas for data-mining options • Some suggestions were discussed at the FGM progress review but further discussion is required in order for a final set of criteria to be developed. • CC8-AI-9: to present plots designed to be made available to CAA users • FGM suggest that the time resolution of magnetic field data should be appropriate for the time interval e.g. • SPIN for intervals longer than 1 hour • 5VPS for intervals between 10 minutes and 1 hour • FULL for intervals less than 10 minutes 8th Cross calibration workshop October 28th 2008

  10. Update on Open Action items from 8th Cross-Calibration meeting - 2 AI for ALL TEAMS • CC8-AI-10: prepare draft answers to T1-T5 • Described above • CC8-AI-13: investigate whether it is feasible to produce data for the commissioning phase • This is feasible in principal, but is not straightforward • We have listed this earlier as a medium priority task • CC8-AI-49: propose key datasets for datasets in response to CAA-EST-TN-017 • Magnetic field data at 5 vectors/second would be appropriate • CC8-AI-50: to check that Dataset Names of all products are unique and that they describe the dataset properly • This has been checked – the names are unique and descriptions complete 8th Cross calibration workshop October 28th 2008

  11. Update on Open Action items from 8th Cross-Calibration meeting AI for FGM • FGM088-AI-1: check inventory plots as there are some missing files of high resolution data • This task is in progress • Data from Cluster 1 and Cluster 2 have been checked and missing data files are in the FGM transfer directory ready for automatic transfer • Checks on data from Cluster 3 and Cluster 4 are pending • FGM08-AI-2: provide a header file for the CALF dataset (calibration files) • A sample header file for Cluster 1 has been prepared and send to the CAA • If the header format is acceptable, then similar headers will be prepared for C2, C3 and C4 • FGM08-AI-3: describe the usage of caveat files (CAVF) and calibration accuracy files (CALA) in the FGM User Guide • These file types are described in the FGM User Guide • FGM08-AI-5: to add a notice in the FGM User Guide that the power spectrogram can sometimes show spin harmonics • This information is included in the FGM User Guide 8th Cross calibration workshop October 28th 2008
