  7. Tips From the Field • Database Optimization • Enable “instant file initialization” on the database servers for huge performance gains during database creation, alters and restores. See  http://bit.ly/fz5l9 • Creation of 20GB: reduced from 14:02 minutes to 1.3 seconds • Alter DB by 10GB: reduced from 7:01 minutes to .4 seconds • Restore empty 30GB DB: reduced from 21:07 minutes to 5 seconds • Restore 30 GB DB (11 GB backup): reduced from 38 minutes to 19 minutes • Disk partition alignment. Increase performance by 20 to 30% and reduce storage costs. http://ow.ly/bjLU • For SharePoint you MUST optimize TempDB. It is used like crazy in SharePoint. Alleviate contention by creating number of data files according to 1/4 to 1/2 number of processors. Beyond 8 files is a waste. Put TempDB on your fastest disks with RAID 1+0
