  1. Bellwork Which do you prefer? Money or Love? A job well done or winning a prize? Finding a solution to a problem or asking someone for the solution? Think about a situation where you were asked to do something that you did not feel comfortable doing. Write down the reasons that you did not do it. Now name a job that you would not do because you are fundamentally opposed to doing it.
  2. Understanding Laws, Morals, and Ethics

If you intend to become successful, you must become familiar with legal and ethical standards AND follow them in performing your daily duties.
  3. Laws

A rule of conduct or action
  4. Criminal laws Protect members of society from harmful acts of others Passed at local, state, and federal levels Carry stricter penalties for offenders than civil statutes (laws)
  5. Civil Laws Concerned with private rights and remedies Under civil law a person may sue another person, a business or the government. Examples of civil disputes are: Contract violation Slander or libel Trespassing Product liability Automobile accidents Family matters (divorce, child support and custody)
  6. Torts A civil wrong committed against a person or property excluding breach of contract It may cause physical injury, property damage, deprivation of personal liberty or freedom Can be willful (intentional) or unintentional (accidental)
  7. Malpractice In health care , negligence is often called medical malpractice and is the most common unintentional tort within the health care delivery system. Reasonable care is expected and should be practiced or you could find yourself dealing with legal matters.
  8. Morals and Ethics

Morals are formed from your personal values and concept of right or wrong Ethics are standards of behavior developed as a result of your moral values. THEY ARE NOT LAWS! In some circumstances they may govern behavior more strictly than laws do!
  9. Is it OK to accept a tip from a client if you are a health care worker? Discuss and defend your position Keep in mind that an unethical act is not necessarily illegal but an illegal act is ALWAYS unethical! Let your conscience be your guide
  10. Who gets the drugs? Consider the following scenario: Your group must come up with a plan that addresses these 4 principles that govern your profession. They are: Non-maleficence-DO NO HARM Beneficence-RESPECT LIFE AND THE PATIENT Autonomy-RESPECT THE PATIENT AND FAMILY IN MAKING DECISIONS Justice-FAIRNESS IN ALL DECISIONS
  11. Medical Dilemma You are considering the treatment of 1000 terminally ill patients whose lives could be extended with the use of an experimental drug. The pharmaceutical manufacturing the drug is producing it in limited quantities (100 doses) for compassionate use only until the FDA approves it for wide-scale use. This means that it cannot be available to everyone who needs it. You are chairing a committee that must recommend how it should be distributed. Keep in mind the principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, justice and autonomy. Your plan should include the following: Who qualifies to receive the drug. How to meet supply and demand of the drug. Conditions patients must agree to before receiving the drug.
  12. Who gets the Drugs assignmentYou will have to come up with a plan that addresses each of the 4 guidelines. Each student is expected to produce a document of their OWN work. At the end of the exercise, combine your documents into a single argument. You will have up to 2 minutes to present your case to the class. The class will select the solution that they feel best satisfies the criteria.Hand in your assignment at the conclusion of the presentations for credit.DUE AT THE END OF THE PRESENTATIONS.
