  2. Life in Afghanistan • The population in Afghanistan is about 26 million people • The life expectancy is less then 44 years • Up to 78% of people in rural places have no access to health care at all • Diseases: • Measles • Trauma • Malaria

  3. Conditions in Afghanistan A lot of villages have little or no access to health care 1 in 5 children die before the age of 5 Women are in a 1 in 3 risk of dying at childbirth

  4. What is Marlin? Marlin is working with the Ministry of Health in Afghanistan They provide essential health care for vulnerable people in some of the country’s most remote and hard to reach areas They are trying to get rid of malaria in the villages there

  5. How is Marlin Helping? They are helping 800,000 people in Kunduz By mid-2010, we will have trained 132 midwives, benefitting over 600,000 people We are reaching at least 197,000 people this year through mobile clinics

  6. Availability of Medical Care A lot of undeveloped places in Afg. Don’t have the right medical care Developing places are hard to find because of the poor economy, poor baseline health indices, and ongoing violence The Basic Package of Health Service provides healthcare that would have the most cost-effective impact on common health problems
