  9. Purpose The effects of hydrocarbons on the amount of light emitted from bioluminescent bacteria.

  10. Hypothesis Alternate: Water with higher amounts of hydrocarbons will cause a decrease in the amount of light emitted from the bacteria Null: Water with hydrocarbons in it will have no effect on the amount of light emitted from the bacteria.

Methodology Water is collected from different locations and a sample of each is tested for the amount of hydrocarbons present using a spectrophotometer Different samples of water are placed into the cultures of bioluminescent bacteria Control No hydrocarbon in water (tap water) Variable 1 Lowest amount of hydrocarbon in water Variable 2 Medium amount of hydrocarbon in water Variable 3 Highest amount of hydrocarbon in water After 24 hours the BLR will be calculated for each sample of water. Statistical Analysis: ANOVA followed by a Sheffe post hoc test
