  2. Bellwork • Please take out your Unit 2 Vocabulary from yesterday and hop to it! You have about 20 minutes to finish up. Absent yesterday? Grab a copy of the vocabulary booklet and definitions in the file.

  3. DISCUSS WITH YOUR GROUPS • What can we learn about people, even after they’ve died? • Think about past and present.

  4. When studying people and civilizations from thousands of years ago, historians, archaeologists, and anthropologists having limited clues and have to infer a lot about these people. • You are going to do a close read on the Iceman, a man and his belonging frozen in time for 4,000-5,000 years.

  5. STEP 1: MARKING THE tEXT • Number the paragraphs. • Circle key ideas, names of people and places, and dates. • Highlight or box unfamiliar words, and using context clues, try to find a synonym. • Underline the main point or other relevant information. • Jot down the most important thing in each section (paragraph). • Finally, at the end of the text, write your final impression.

  6. STEP 2: TEXT DEPENDENT QUESTIONS • On the back of your article, answer the following questions: • 1. What can you infer from the title? • 2. Summarize the text. (1-2 sentences) • 3. What events or details does the author provide that helps the reader learn about the iceman?

  7. 4. What kind of text is this? • 5. Explain the meaning of the word archaeologist? • 6. What was the problem and solution to examining the iceman for further analysis and historical significance?

  8. 7. Explain how the author uses reasons/evidence to support the main idea of the text. • 8. How does the author use specific quantitative evidence to support the idea that exposure of the iceman to the elements may degrade and/or destroy the body for future examination and analysis? • 9. Compare the text to another piece of art, music, a webpage or other media.
