  4. The Mouse • The Mouse is how you navigate your computer • Left Click: Selects operations on the screen, the main button you will use • Right Click: Brings up a menu on the computer screen, same as using the menu button on your keyboard Left Click Right Click

  5. Your Desktop • A desktop is everything that you see on your monitor screen • Icons – images that when clicked on open a program • Important Programs on the Library Computers: Internet Browsers, Microsoft Word

  6. The Start Menu • Select this button on the lower left hand side of the screen • This Brings up the Start Menu: A list of all the programs you have on a computer

  7. Computer Programs • Also Called Software • Example of Software • Internet Explorer: A piece of software used to browse the Internet

  8. Using the Internet • What is the Internet? The Internet is a network of millions of computers used to send information back and forth to one another. • What do I need to use the internet? A Computer, an Internet Connection, and a Browser

  9. Using the Internet Safely:It’s Not Scary if you just Stay Smart! • Never Give Out Personal Information on the Internet • Don’t Click on Internet Pop-Up Ads • If Something Seems “Too Good to Be True” It Probably Is! • Remember: You Have the Power to Protect Yourself!

  10. Common Internet Scams • Rouge Security Software • Phishing • Advance-Fee Fraud • Pop-Up Ads: “You Have Won!” and “Free Smiley Icons!”
